Saw a 1909 VDB on eBay recently with a pretty poor photo... but based on what I could see, I knew it had some nice original toning so I bought it.

Unfortunately, the seller just put the slab loose in a thin bubble mailer w/o any other protection. That doesn't always work and you really need to pack slabs in some sort of cardboard mailer inside of the bubble mailer if you want to prevent them from showing up like this:

Sort of a bummer as it would cost nearly more than the coin is worth to get PCGS to reholder the coin ($10 fee + $8 handling + shipping both ways). Fortunately, the coin appears undamaged. Still waiting to hear back from the seller regarding this matter...

I'd love to see some close-ups, Mike (even with that massive crack in the way of the obv!). I like those deep, dark browns evenly mixed with the orange/red hues. :)

I wanted to show 2 new additions to my collection but these pics are horrible! The 11D is a simply gorgeous 65RB that faces up so well that I'm thinking of sending it to NGC for a + and *. Coppermania, I'm thinking of naming you in my will to have 1st option to buy it. It's that impressive. I've never seen anything close! The 14D is a compromise between my collection goal and my pocketbook. It is a 62RB CAC that I "won" in the last Heritage auction. 11Dobv.jpg 11Drev.jpg 14Dobv.jpg 14Drev.jpg

I wish I could afford to make that compromise. I saw that 14-D and seriously thought it was undergraded. I am sure the coloring keeps it from high grades, but that is one heck of a strike and so few marks. I would personally think it has a shot at 64, but at least a 63. Since you have it in hand, do you agree?

You're right RimCents. I, like you, think its undergraded. Strong strike, no harsh or offensive marks or nicks and overall 63-4. All I can sense is that PCGS didn't like that color "striping" - which I actually find intriguing. It's found a home in my collection leaving only 3 more cents for a complete '09 to present Red/RedBrown collection (excluding the 22 no D, mine's brown)

WOW! A 1914D woody.....beautiful man! Definately under-graded with the woody artificial TPG penalty.

River guy, that is always cool when somebody is thinking of me for anything good :smile. I'm sure the 1911 D cent looks even better in hand. I pretty sure rlm wants to be named in the will for the 1914 D woodie! pretty spectacular for the issue! Way to go man, Matt

The will is just a last resort. There are other methods in the mean time.

Finally was able to get this coin to show the way it does in hand. I put a "spot" flood bulb in my lamp and that makes a huge difference in what I am getting out of my pictures. I have a pretty good camera (sony cybershot) but using the new light bulb for 5 bucks makes up the difference until I am ready to step up to a SLR.

    Gorgeous coin - AGAIN!

Yes, lighting is so important. Most people want to buy a new camera and they could do so much better by just buying a new bulb/bulbs.

So a spot flood bulb got it I will have to try that since I have a few like this that I have not been able to capture correctly due to lighting. Thanks for the advice.

I agree with all of that. Most any decent camera with a macro feature can take good enough pictures for web purposes. It's mostly about the lighting, white balance, camera distance and angle (for extra shots to capture toning).

I use a simple $25 lamp I picked up from Lowes. Here's pics of the lamp and the bulb specs:
