I finally went to the local coin shop to show them the quarter, and it is an error!

He said it was created when the dies were misaligned, while the pressure was adjusted to high causing the coin to be damaged as so. He also told me that the coin was worth around $50! So i am very glad to have my first circulated error coin.

Come on! You should offer him at least face value (25 cents) instead of 1/4 cent. :hail:

    $0.25 does not equal 0.25¢.

    $0.25 = 1/4 dollar = 25¢

    0.25¢ = 1/4 cent

Good for you! I wouldn't sell it either since it's the first legitimate error you've found.

I'd say your local dealer, like most local dealers knows nothing about errors.

Sell it to him, maybe he'll learn.

I agree 100% with this. Just because a person is a coin dealer does not necessarily make them a coin guru. Many (most?) dealers know less about coins than many advanced collectors.

WOW! I can not believe this thread about this beat up piece of junk is still going. almost 100% of all coin dealers don't hardly even know what a error coin is. coin dealers sell coins not errors. If it was a error coin dealer then that would be different and I'm sure the OP never asked a error coin dealer. anyone that has even a tiny bit of knowledge about error coins will know right away that this is just a beat up and ruined coin. I doubt if it would even work in a vending machine. There is absolutely no way that this is what the coin dealer said it was if someone was even asked. a MAD [misaligned die coin] has one side struck off center and the other side will be normal and not all beat up. Did some of you really believe this story about the coin dealer thing?

This thread has been good for one reason for me and one reason only. It has shown on here the folks that actually know about error coins and how they are created at the mint and the ones that know nothing at all about error coins and the minting process.. anyone intersted in collecting error coins should first learn the minting process of coins. then they can know the difference between just damaged coins and real mint errors .
