I really don't like them — They aren't as thick and stiff as the more contemporary holders and they're wider (9½ inches wide versus 8½ inches for the contemporary holders). I'll probably send them in to PCGS and have them re-holdered.
I tend to favor PMG over PCGS due to holder issues you and Steve just mentioned. I also like that they are smaller overall, so for me it is easier to store them.
Here's something different! I picked it up from the Post Office this morning. It has the "Apparent" designation for the minor rust stain:
I was expecting it. The minor stain bothers me less than the poor registration — The front has a narrow bottom margin, but the back is almost centered with even margins. I've seen plenty of mismatched digits in serial numbers, but this is the first time I ever saw mismatched prefixes.
I bought the $10s and $5 off craigslist for $50. I got the $1 in change. I'm not a bill collector, by any measure, but I figured if someone needed the money, I could try to help them out. One of the $10s has a mark on it, which I'd guess makes it worth... $10. Maybe I overpaid, but I look at it this way: I paid $35 for a VG/F $10 Hawaii note and got a PR $10 Hawaii note and a $5 silver cert for face.
IMO, you got a good deal... Either that, or I got totally ripped off last time I purchased a HA note... Nice face finds on the $1 and $5 though!!
That's an incredible note Saltysam! IMO some of the best southern obsoletes came out of Louisiana... ------------------------------------------------- How about a '34A Silver Cert
I think this error is amazing Clay! Little surprised at the apparent grade for the minute rust stain, but it shouldn't hinder re-sale value too much.
I'm not Steve, but it is a Fort Worth Face Plate 106 Error — The "106" is much larger than other plate numbers.
Thanks Clay....you're right. You can find it on the internet, or another good reason to own/read currency guides. :dead-horse:
