I just found a Kennedy half dollar with three dates. The date 1972 is located in the center of the coin (how the date is normally stamped) and there are two small dates. 1960 and 1980 on each side. could this be an actual error? Or do you think someone altered it?
Brian, are the two extra dates you speak of inverse (concave) on the coin's surface? We really need some photos to verify if you have an authentic mint error or not... -Brian
Brian, if your coin is at all similar to talley's, it is post-mint damage. Sorry. talley (unless you already knew). -Brian
Yeah, I think I had a very similar post to Brian's when I first found it. It's a novelty item, but no real value.
They were a PMD altered silver or gold electroplated "commemorative" that celebrated the 20th anniversary of JFK's 1960 Presidential Election. No value beyond the $0.50 face, but an entertaining novelty to find in circulation, perhaps. (Sorry about the small photo...best I could find for now...I'll keep looking)
I'm very new to coin collecting, so i could think of a million questions to ask. I wanted to know what kind of errors should i look for in half dollars? I work at a bank and have a client that has one of his customers pay in half dollars all the time, so whenever he gets them, I exchange cash for it. I've been getting a lot of 40% silver from 65-69, but want to see what else to look for.
The counterstamped Kennedy half has been discussed here a few times... I think this was the latest: http://www.cointalk.com/t194805/
