I've been idle for a while. Today I finally dove into my massive pile of coins that have been accumulating and found a couple of interesting ones. I found this coin a while back, and I'm curious as to what may have caused this condition. Anybody got any ideas? Is this a genuine error, or is it post mint damage?
Definitely Post-mint damage. I found a Kennedy Half Dollar while coin-roll hunting with similar abrasions. I believe the deep hits are caused by the high-speed inpact of a metal BB from the coin being used for target practice for BB-gun enthusiasts. -Brian
Agreed with post-mint damage, but definitely not from bullets. Possibly a strong BB gun or a couple of shotgun pellets. The spots are too small even for a .22 caliber.
Uhhhmm, I think you need to read my first response again... I mentioned nothing about lethal firearms being used to cause the damage to this coin... :foot-mouth: -Brian
.22 would likely tear through a coin as well and cause more damage than this, unless they were shooting from really far away.
