Ugh, another mispelling in the title!! Lame! I have been buying entire sets of Roosevelt Silver dimes. The latest set had many beautiful toners in it, but also quite a few like these. The toning is near terminal in my opinion. Would these be body bagged by the TPG's?
I believe they would, yes. That first one especially would be bagged even if it wasn't toned. The 2nd probably would too.
Ok Doug. I figured as much. I guess some conserving is in order. Here is the entire set if anyone wants to see. I assume these were always togethor as this set in the whitman album. Check out the varying degrees of toning. eek! http://www.thecoinnection.com/member/MemberCoinShelf.html?memberAlbum=181#
Honestly, most of those aren't worth conserving in my opinion. And several of those that I looked at are damaged and ungradeable - and not because of the toning.
By conserving, I mean dipping. I didn't mean NCS or anything crazy like that. Just a quick toxic bath. I assume the damage you are referring to are scratches on poor Frankies's face on some of them? Poor guy. Wanted to add. My silver set purchases come to me at melt, so I am not all bitter about the terminal toning and scratches here and there. I am just always hoping for that one or two that are just killer toned and gemmy. edit: Franklin, not Teddy. duhhhh.
I figured you meant dipping. However, a dip that would remove that heavy dark toning is also likely to remove most if not all of the luster. And God knows what ya might find under that toning. And most of the coins are such low grades due to contact marks and such that it just isn't worth the effort. And yes, I am talking about the scratches and gouges when I say damage. If you're getting those sets at melt more power to ya. But I wouldn't hold out much hope of finding any gems. Not unless you get extremely lucky ! As a general rule buying sets is highly unproductive. And in many cases it is even counterproductive.
Don't crush my dreams Doug! There was another CT user who did what I am doing. He received a batch and sent them in. All toned, and now he is the proud owner of some of the finest graded * grade NGC dimes. Miracles can happen! Let's hope they can happen twice! And cmon, even you must think these are pretty, albeit not high grade (from the previous set I bought): Here is the entire previous set: http://www.thecoinnection.com/member/MemberCoinShelf.html?memberAlbum=179#
