I don't understand why people feel the need to clean coins .
Now I have to make a decision, keep or send back .

Yeah I agree. It's no doubt a cool variety, and at 200 or so wouldn't be bad if it had original surfaces.

One cent shows it the best, look at the area around the letters . also the devices around the rim ...

Also the coin has the shield affect, not the spoke affect ...

You mean the dark areas that didn't get "cleaned"? Also, "the shield effect"?

Those areas are actually burned from chemicals . If you hold a coin in your hand and rotate it from side to side there should be a Spoke effect to the coin . This coin has the shield effect, which just shines from side to side no spoke effect whatsoever .

Unless you had picked it up for a song, I'd send it back. I bought a 1914 D that had been cleaned. I have a slabbed coin, but I wanted one for the Lincoln Cent album. So, I bid low and bought it. I'd do the same for an S VDB, but I haven't run up to one at this point (it's a timing thing).

These raw 83's don't come up on the market raw very often. When they do it feels like you ought to snag it up. I have only seen 2 raw. I bought one of them.

I bought mine raw as well. Couldn't tell you what I paid for it, but less than it's worth. Might have been 1 of the 2 or 3 I've seen raw. A nice specimen to have in the collection.
