Not having it in hand its hard to say from the images but looks to be a ddo . Orange peel,as well soft strike I say late state 63.
I should comment, there is a slight bit of chatter in the field left of the mintmark. Otherwise a pretty clean coin.
Fascinating. I checked for a few P/P varieties but not a DDO. I don't think one even comes up for Variety Plus.
There are 2 on Variety Vista. Both minors. DDO-004, 005. http://varietyvista.com/04a JN DD Vol 1/DDOs 1942.htm
Happy for the FS, but I thought the grade was low. Maybe the above pictures aren't that good, but I've sent in similar war nickels to NGC that came back MS66-67. That said, the number of 63-64 votes don't lie. Thank you all for participating.
There's something about coins not breaking into the gem category (65+) that can irk me, even if the price difference isn't that much. Unfortunately this wasn't the only nickel in the submission that fell short, I was posting this more or less to gauge myself.
It seems like NGC might be in a more conservative phase (especially with nickels). There were a few guess the grade threads from @Lehigh96 of NGC slabbed Jeffersons and quite a few graded lower than many of us expected.
I am late to the party, but I had guessed MS65. Since NGC gave it FS, the area I was concerned with in the first quadrant on the 5th step must be the photo. As for the numerical grade, the obverse is MS66, but the reverse has a significant problem in the field above the dome and to the right of the mintmark. I thought that the premium gem obverse would carry the overall grade, but I completely understand NGC's decision to consider it grade limiting and not award a gem grade.
