Well I wanted a Marcus A. denarius but none seem to be within the price I wanna pay so I settled on the next Adoptive Emperor I have wanted for awhile, Nerva. Nerva (96 - 98 A.D.) AR Denarius O:IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR POT II Laureate head right. R: COS III PATER PATRIAE Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, jug and lituus. RIC 225, 34. Cohen 51. 18mm 3.1g
Nice example. Good profile with his nose he was somewhat known for. I think you chose well, I would prefer that coin over most Marcus A's out there. Chris
This is also my darkest toned & first "Priestly Implements" ancient, which makes this piece cooler for me. A Marcus will surface for me, even if it takes nearly a year like Elagabalus did. Domitian is the next male emperor I am targeting, hopefully next month. I have no system going, just buying what I want added next, lol.
Most common ones I find are Minveras. I almost got a Minerva with the owl on the lower right but it was sold & not marked sold But thats the type I am looking for.
Nice addition and very distinctive profile. Nerva is not a well known emperor who would deserve a better appreciation. Although he has not ruled for long, I believe he was a wise man ; one of those people put into the place as a "transitionnal puppet" and doing much more and a better job than expected first. Q
Good point. I think he did better than people gave him credit for. His one greatest accomplishment in my mind, though, appointing Trajan as Caesar, I am not sure he completely had the power to say no to.
That is a really nice example of the type. It is what I would consider a classic Nerva denarius profile. I bought a Nerva denarius quite recently too. The style of portrait is quite different from yours though still with the pronounced nose. Martin
Nice Nerva, Mat. Seems nicely toned too unlike so many denarii I see these days with bright toning. Interesting you are having trouble finding a suitable Marcus Aurelius, and found a Nerva instead which i thought are generally scarcer.
