Wouldn't the gold plating ruin the value of the coin significantly? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1868-Shield...S_Individual&hash=item3f0fbc9b08#ht_500wt_970
Any time you plate a coin it takes away any numismatic value the coin may have had. You are inflicting damage....
My answer was in regard to your statement: "Wouldn't the gold plating ruin the value of the coin significantly?"
And, CC? If this coin strikes your fancy and you are considering purchasing it because you like the look and think it's "cool" there is nothing wrong with that. Lots of folks collect novelty pieces. But consider the sellers price for this thing. A minuscule amount of gold for an exorbitant price. NO, No.
,couldnt the gold plating be removed? if not I suppose it could be nickel plated and should fetch around 35 to 40, I still do not have a nice shield nickel for my type set, I would not consider the one the op posted
