I don't know why I buy the NGC pic, because they are always flat looking with no luster. Great point you make though. The pic should look just like the coin does in hand. There are sellers that can manipulate a pic to be perfect. Always make sure you can return a purchase, and if not, then run. There have been many threads here that have Peace dollars to guess the grade. They are great for practice to learn what you need to look for, and at the end, you can see what the final grade was.
They are beautiful coins. I got discouraged trying to find the right ones for upgrades, after I had built the initial full set. Peace dollars are one of those series best pursued by buying coins sight-seen, in-hand. Here's the '34-S that was part of my set. It was a 63. Lance.
Wow, that is indeed a beauty.. I take it you no longer own this one... I can understand feeling a need to see these Peace dollars in hand for a good judge of the overall look for the grade. I only have a single graded Peace dollar PCGS 63 for a 22d and it has some nice tone around the rim on both sides. The few raw ones I have are nice as well but can see differences in photos versus in hand even with the ones I have here. There are very few graded Peace dollars around this area as most are of the raw form and not usually good..
Yeah, the unfortunate scar on the neck bothered me. Okay, it's a 63 and there will be issues like that. I spent a long time trying to find a nice replacement. I couldn't, in my price range. I like clean devices. Liberty's cheek and neck, eagle's head and breast. I can live with a little chatter in non-focal areas. And luster counts, thank you very much. But I couldn't put it all together. So I gave up after a few years. One of my many failures. Time to move on, you know? It's a very tough series. But I still think Liberty is finally hot. Lance.
That is a shame about the scar on her neck. Seems like without that she would have gone 64 or better... That becomes a rather healthy increase value wise. I like those clean devices as well and something I am really learning myself is the grade is one thing but the eye appeal is truly the part that counts. Like I said, I'm going to give this a serious effort but I still love those Morgans.. Especially some I have seen on the Harlan Berk site.. Some of those I might have to aquire..
