As some of you know, I've been involved with Barbers since the mid 1960's while in college. I still collect and am now working on my 9th circulated set - half are raw in a Dansco and the others are still in TPG's - that I have every intention of cracking out. The grades are VG 10 thru XF 40 - with the majority in VF 25. I think I'll stay with the 25-30 grade from now on as it has a good look , still has most details except for the wing tips, and are reasonable enough not to break the bank. I've always said that the "fun of collecting is in the hunt" and I'll be assisting Glenn Holsonbake once again in Baltimore & I hope that you all will have a chance to stop by and say hello. We'll have a great selection of all denominations of Barbers. At Pittsburgh, I had the pleasure of meeting LogPotato and his beautiful friend, we called Mrs. LogPotato [ she had a laugh at that !! ]
I picked up some Barber Halves in old ANACS small cachets the other day - nothing earth-shattering - but some nice VF's: I'll have no problem cracking these out for the Dansco.
She had a good time though. I'll be cruising through at Baltimore. I don't know if I will be picking up many halves, but I have a few coins I am having Todd photograph. I'll be sure to drop in on you and Glenn to say hi.
Where do you get that this lovely coin was cleaned? It is mint state (of course) but I don't see a cleaning anywhere on it. Is it a raw coin or slabbed? No matter what, it is a lovely coin.
That is so cool about Buddy Ebson! I didn't know that he was a numismatist. I guess there are a lot of celebrities who partake of our hobby. In my opinion it is the widest practiced hobby in the world. And yes, that would be so cool if we were to get our hands on a 1894 S dime in any condition!
I posed this question ATS @ PCGS - so - I'll pose it here as well. While at the ANA Pittsburgh, I bought a nice example of my favorite date in the Barber Half series. This evening, I bid on and won another seemingly as nice example of the same date and mint. Can you tell me why I did such a thing, afterall, I had just purchased the above coin. Why did I buy the coin below ? [ Aside from the fact that I'm a compulsive Barber Half Collector ? ]
Because PCGS just bumped the price of XF40 grades of that date and M.M. from $975 to $1100... And yours closely resemble a coin of that very grade. Nice pick-ups. -Brian
Here's a newspaper article about the sale of Buddy Ebsen's collections, in 1987. He was quite a coin collector. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...evision-actor-buddy-ebsen-beverly-hillbillies
I'd say nice eye on the Type 2, but there was a sticker on the slab. I know you know the difference anyways. The Type 2 being a bit more rare. Nice pickup.
Thanks, Justin. If that sticker wasn't on the coin, I might not have looked twice at the coin as I just this past two weeks bought the Ty 1 in Pittsburgh. { I had already squirreled it away by the time you made it to my table !! } I "had" every intention of cracking the coin out for the Dansco but now thought better of it - and now I just added a decent Fine 15 - raw - to the album. { Problem solved... spend more money !! } Looking forward to seeing you and Stephanie in Baltimore.
LOL I didn't bring enough money to the show to buy an XF 01-S. That coin was safe from me! My girlfriend (not named Stephanie) will not be along with me this time. Sorry to disappoint. I will either be by myself or I will have a friend with me who collects just about anything.
