Since so many have come under attack for being the lucky ones to get in to get this set, I thought it would be interesting to see the numbers behind what the motivating factors were for our forum members here. By percentage. I'm guessing it's spread out pretty evenly but I could be wrong. Hopefully the poll will be informative and covers most cases. I will keep it anonymous but I will admit I wanted at least one set for my collection and for my new baby. We just had our first child the day before these went on sale. I'm sure many others will want these as a birth year set.

I feel very fortunate to have lucked out and got in when I did. I had to check CT on my phone to see how sales were going. Once I saw the degree of panic that had set in, I decided to get going and take action. I was refreshing my laptop during lunch in a hospital cafeteria with my battery down to 25% when I finally got back to my shopping cart long enough to click quick check out at 1:05 p.m. CDT.

Anyway, this was my original motivation to get a set. Then they set the household limit at 5 so I clicked 5. I figured, why not? I wanted to make sure I could get a nice set out of the bunch. Now I think I'm going to keep 3 sets and just sell 2 for whatever they go for to help pay for the ones I kept. It seemed like a rational strategy. I don't think anybody here would pass up the chance at a deal like this, I don't care what they say. I've never gotten in one of these before, so I'm not a habitual "flipper". This just happened to be one I got in on.

You didn't have the option I wanted........."I didn't order any and I could care less about supporting the Mint's price-gouging policies."

But, to answer your question, those who can afford them will order multiples of "5" using family members and/or employees to satisfy their own greed.

  4. I ordered one set for my collection. Got through the order process before 12:15 no problem. I could have ordered 5 (or asked friends and family to assist to get even more) but opted not to do so. TC

This whole fiasco has just reassured me that I will never buy anything direct from the mint, especially not overpriced bullion trinkets.

My experience is completely identical to yours Vess, except substitute "6 weeks" for "the day before" regarding my first child. I would have never even thought of ordering a set if it weren't the wish to buy a set for him.

The 20th set had 3 coins the "W" and reverse proof were the good ones 250k limit. Later they also made the "W" available as a seperate purchase.

I didn't even attempt to order and certainly won't be interested in purchasing in the secondary market.

The only people I have seen 'attacked' are the ones that were bragging about getting more than the mint limit of 5.

Not so. I have seen several posts attacking people for getting 5 because "the Mint should have limited it to one each and now I didn't get one so you are greedy for getting five". Add that to the whining from people who are glad it is over so they don't have to see posts about the exciting new coin set (on a coin forum no less), and I am coming to the conclusion that the people on this forum are not as nice as I had previously thought. In fact, there are a few long-time members that are close to making my "ignore" list.

I thought about that, but in the end I got the limit as per the program design and they are for collecting, not resale. If they had stayed available until the Mint removed the limit, I would likely have doubled up.

I haven't seen the attacks on people for getting within the limit, but not saying it's not true.
    I just haven't seen it.
Like you though, I have watched otherwise upstanding members brag, lie, whine,
and do otherwise unseemly things over this...
they have grown my ignore list from '0' to about '5' now. Sad.

This guy has been the worst, but I have seen subtle jabs from others. This is a new account created this month for the express purpose of complaining about this set, so I am pretty sure it is a current member that didn't want to complain under their own account.

I tried for about an hour, in the middle of the day. I finally decided not to give up any more of my day. Had I been meant to get through, it would have happened. Sometimes, it helps build character to not get something you (I) want! I will enjoy everyones photos and stories as they are posted.

So, no, I am not bothered about anyone else buying more than one set. They'd have sold out either way.

I wanted 3 sets - one for me and one for each of my children. They are both teenagers. They aren't really all that interested in coins, but I think one day they will appreciate that I've built collections for both of them.

I have no interest in those coins, so I ordered 2 strictly to flip.

If I had an actual order, I would open it and make the best possible set out of the 5 and sell the rest asap. I wouldn't worry too much about how big the profit was, just a little would satisfy me.

I don't see an answer for me; I suspect it was because it became a challenge.

I'm far more interested in bullion than numismatics, and went to bed Wednesday thinking I wouldn't buy any because they were twice the bullion value. Got up Thursday, and decided to see how difficult it was.

Started with Firefox. After about an hour (by which time I had started reading posts here and elsewhere, I tracked down the mint's phone number and started dialing. No luck there either.

So I started IE. This was becoming a challenge. Firefox wouldn't even let me bring up the mint's page. IE let me add a set to the cart. Progress! And then my computer locked up. Couldn't even bring up task manager. So I rebooted and tried again. Same thing happened.

Rebooted again. By now, I'm getting determined I'm going to get through. I downloaded Chrome, and tried it. Got through, added a set to my cart, and got to the next page. By then I had forgotten that I didn't want to pay that much, and I had forgotten that an alternative strategy was to place three orders (two for one set, and one for three sets) so I could sell some to pay for the ones I kept, and changed my order to be for five sets.

101 phone calls, four hours of hitting refresh on different browsers, and rebooting my computer twice. And I'm still not totally sure why I did it.

I'm now trying to decide if I want to keep them all, unopened, sell them all, or find someone who will buy three or four sets and give back one or two sealed sets in change.

The 2006-W with the burnished finish was made available either before or at the same time as the 3-coin 20th anniversary set. That is why NGC required that to be eligible for the "Black Label" anniversary provenance, the sets had to be submitted in the Mint's unopened shipping containers because they feared that some submitters might switch coins to get a better specimen.

Whoa. This thread took a different direction today than I was expecting. Was hoping to maybe cool down the situation by showing it wasn't all about greed.

I don't think you can total up and compare the value of mint products since 2004 and come up with any meaningful data. Bullion prices have risen too much and there are a lot more offerings. I have not bought a 5 oz ATB yet and I probably won't. That doesn't mean I hate them for selling them or that other people shouldn't like them. Obviously somebody is buying them or they wouldn't make them. That's just one example. I don't understand the animosity over mint offerings. I don't buy from them often either but sometimes an important set comes along that is nice to get in on if you can. I'll be back to the old stuff after this.

I didn't make a 9th spot for people who didn't care about this set because I figured they would have skipped over the thread. A do not care spot would be needed for every poll then and it would seem pretty useless to others that are interested.
