I think I have a 1965 silver quarter, but im not sure. I know for a fact it is 1965, but not sure if it is silver. How do I figure this out?
There are multiple ways. One of the most simple ways to check the rim. If it is silver colored instead of half brown and half silver, there is a chance that it is silver. The best way to check would be weighing it, and if it is 6.25 grams or very close to it's possible you may have a silver 1965 quarter.
Weigh it. If it is a normal clad coin (which is 99.9999916% chance) it will weigh 5.67 grams. If it is a 90% silver coin (0.0000084% chance) it will weigh 6.25 grams.
You are correct on weighing it. However, looking at the rim color is not an indication of whether it is silver or not. The rim on a clad coin can appear to be silver, or it could be plated.
I know. Thats why I said there's a chance it could be silver (even if its a 0.0000084% chance like Hobo said ). Ill make sure to clarify that it's not a sure way to tell if it's silver next time I give help to someone, though.
Haha, now that you point it out I realize how stupid I sounded by saying rim instead of edge. I'll make sure to remember this one next time I try and help someone too. P.S. How to you reply to two posts within one post?
At the bottom of each post (except for your own posts) you have three choices: 1) Reply 2) Reply With Quote and 3) Multiple Quote (it is a quotation mark with a '+' beside it). If you want to quote from two previous posts simply click on multiple quote for both of them (this will place a check mark beside them). Then click 'Reply With Quote'. A reply box will open with both previous posts quoted. Edit the previous post quotes as desired and type your reply/replies. Simple as that.
You can also lay a kleenex tissue over it and a regular clad. Just one thin layer of kleenex under average light. A true silver coin or surface will reflect light back through a tissue and appear bright white. The clad will be dark gray and barely visible.
