I have a 1991 - D Penny, that looks like it is a different material and color then all the other pennys. Also, there isnt a mark on this penny- we found it in a time vault type deal.. CAN Anybody tell me why this 1991D penny appears GOLD, and different when held up to other pennies? Picture attached: SORRY FOR PICTURE QUALITY, I ONLY HAVE A CELL PHONE.

It could be gold plated, can't really tell with the pics though.

Probably not Post Mint Damage (inside joke around here) :)
It's a brass cent from the combination of zinc and copper.

Wow thanks for the fast and helpful responses. I'll see what I can do on ebay with it.

I disagree. From that image, as bad as it is, I would say definitely post mint damage from being plated.

    Hello Rocco,

Maybe it it's a proof coin that they messed up and it didn't get the S mint mark. ????
Or maybe it's previous environmental conditions toned it. I have a 1991 quarter which is gold plated, but I've only ever seen two gold plated bicentennial quarters (and I kept them). They did that back in the day, but to my on those knowledge, bicentennial there were only those coins that got gold plated.

You could pay PCGS or NGC to grade it, then you would know for sure.
