Well you can do completed auction searches to get more accurate price. I don't know if the Overton # is a better # or not but Pcgs says http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/20104033/

One day I was in a farmers market and saw a booth where they were buying gold. So I asked the guy how much he would give me for my ring. He said $289.00, I sais ok I'll take 20-$20 gold coins and give you $11.00 in change. Well he turned me down.

    I'd turn you down, too. $400 - $289 = $11?

If PCGS retail is $1250, then $600 probably isn't a bad offer from a dealer. I checked out the solds on Ebay, and found one recently sold that was in a slightly worse grade that sold at $685. The current listings on Ebay include some that might be interesting for you to watch. From what I'm seeing, you may make a bit more money by listing it on Ebay, but even after the fees it might be enough of a gain for you to consider it worth the trouble. Or, you could just tell the dealer you want $650 for it, and call it a good deal.

$600 is way too low on that coin, you should be able to get around $1000 on that one or more without too much trouble if you sell on eBay or here on the forums.

Looked it up on PCGS CoinFacts and here's the info. PCGS Price Guide is $1250 on that one. Sometimes that retail price is higher than the real market value, but it doesn't appear to be high in this case. Here's some recent auction results for this coin in VF35:

    PCGS VF35
    $1265 (6/2011)
    $1208 (4/2010)
    $1208 (6/2009)

As you can see, the price of a PCGS graded VF35 that looks decent (as yours does) seems relatively stable in the $1200-$1250 range retail. Accordingly, selling for a little less than that shouldn't be too difficult.

Using the Greysheet price for this isn't appropriate in my opinion. These early bust halves are listed in the quarterly greysheets which are infrequently updated. Moreover, they simply list a VF price, then the next one up is XF. The VF price is for a VF20 coin... your coin as a VF35 is worth much more than a generic VF20.

In any event, if you disagree with any of the foregoing, I'll happily buy the coin from you right now for the Greysheet bid of $700 ;)

    Nice coin!

Actually, in looking at the eBay listings linked by Peter, this exact coin is currently being sold on eBay in an auction ending this weekend... perhaps the OP isn't telling us the entire story here???

Yep... that seems to happen quite often. Well, I guess the OP will find out how much more than $600.00 the coin is worth.

currently it's worth $660 and not a penny more. However, that may change over the next 2 days 4 hours :D

$600 is a fair offer from a B&M dealer. You can always make more selling it on ebay. And sometimes no where near what is expected - to the good and to the minus. Now lets see what it goes for. :)

Good catch, I didn't look closely at the active listings, just the completed ones.

FYI, the coin ended up selling for $880 on eBay. I thought it actually went a little low. So it seems the dealer's offer wasn't too good at $600. But since the OP was apparently not being completely honest with us about the coin, perhaps there was never a dealer that offering that amount. I'm guessing the OP saw the coin on eBay and wanted to buy it and was just fishing for info on how much he should bid...

Well, at least we now know not to trust anything the OP says and just messed up his reputation as a collector.
