After some research and further looking around on the web, I'm quite sure this is authentic. It's not a "coin" per se, but a token of the sorts. I thought it was pretty cool.

Yes I couldn`t agree more, I have several in sets, mounted in display cases, in fact I collect more on the medal side than coins nowadays, each medal is indididual, as they were issued to the recipient with their name, rank, service number and regiment impressed on the outside edge. and I can research the persons military record and actions with the aid of Documents on Line. Here`s just but a few of many I have.
New Jersey only liked the heads of horses on their coins (Though, it may technically be a mule). -Brian
These are two of my newer quite old tokens. The first is a nice Conder token from Kent. The second is an "unofficial farthing" of Oxfordshire 1835.
There are many horse coins among the ancients but one of the most 'different' is this four horse chariot facing and pulling the sun god Sol. Note the flames below their feet. There is also a small horse on the emperor's shield on the obverse. Roman Empire, Probus, 276-282 AD, Siscia mint
