How does NCS treat cleaned coins? The reason I ask is because the coin appears to have been cleaned at some time in the past but I could be wrong! Will NCS bodybag the coin like NGC, if it is found to have been cleaned or will the conserve and grade it? Frank
Frank: NCS will 'conserve' it (remove PVC, dirt, ugly toning, etc) Then, it will either send to NGC for slabbing-- if the coin is okay, or salb it as NCS & notate as genuine and note the problem.
belated update Not long after the original post in 2008, I sent this to NCS really hoping they'd be able to do some nice conservation with it, but they refused to do anything and returned it as XF Details - cleaned. I called trying to understand why they didn't do any conservation and they said the surfaces would have been damaged and so they opted to not do anything. It was part of a submission of 5 coins, all of them returned as cleaned, a few of which I expected, a couple I and local coin dealers disagreed with. Kind of put me out of coin collecting for a while.
If you join the ANA [$46] you can submit to NCS and NGC yourself. Of course all fees are payable by the submitter.
