The obverse color on the MS 64 BN is so great -- you don't fully appreciate it until you see it zoomed up.
As a Southern patriot I despise Lincoln..........but I sure do love a toned Lincoln penny! Nice looking coins y'all!
I've watched the 09vdb closely over the past decade or two... it doesn't surprise me that no one bit on this cent. Only a few years ago,, or maybe it was 5-6 years ago,, you could get a full roll of gem bu (the good kind) of 09vdb's for around $15 per coin,, each at least 65 with a excellent end roll toners in each roll and maybe a couple or few 67's in there also..... this is a very very very common coin in gem BU. That said, all coin prices are subject to dramatic grown in short order.. the 09vdb has been one of the most prevalent risers recently imo. Beautiful coins btw.....
I totally agree with you. The 1909 vdb is common as heck. But I just thought the toning was so nice that the toned coin lovers would be chomping at the bit. Anyway it was good for me as I got this well below the guide price.
Someday, I'll crack these and see if there is any good ones in there. Lets keep this thread going guys!
This 24 D is about 90% red and has a great strike and luster. Housed in an older NGC slab with an MS65 RB technical grade and CAC. By itself, I would think this coin would be full red until I set it next to a coin that is a red blazer, only then can you see it is just a shade from that. Fits just right in my BN, RB collection. Matt
Nice Lincoln there............ I have problems being about to determine the color grades persay, I am not color blind but the RB and RD versus plain BR just gets a bit confusing at times...
I just posted this on the New Acquisitions thread, but thought I would add it to this Lincolns thread. I've been looking for a Mint State Steel Cent that shows some color for months with no luck. Then I saw that PCGS MS65 OGH 1943 Lincoln with very cool copper color showing through (esp on the obverse). When I first saw it I thought a bit of copper in the alloy didn't get mixed properly, but then I read there was no copper in these coins at all. The inner blank is pure steel, and the outer coating is zinc. In any case, I got this interesting Lincoln for the bargain price of $24. There is also a die crack around 10 o'clock on the reverse. I think it's a pretty cool coin.
I have seen a few other '22-D cents with this red color. Someone posted his here, I think. rlm? Anyway, I find it interesting and unusual, in general. I don't think I own another like it. Lance.
Mine may be called red, but far from that shade. Actually, yours reminds me a lot of Arizona Jack's that he cherrypicked. It turned out to be 65 RED. Nice!!
Here's the only other 43 I've seen with toning. It has a light straw color with a blue color around the portrait....tough for me to capture:
I guess it was not just me. I had a devil of a time shooting mine also and still did not catch much of the pink by the wheats.
