Yes, our quest to view some of the Thaler coinage that had circulated in the different German Free States prior to 1871, brings us to Hamburg. Where is Hamburg located in reference to the map of Germany? Here's a map courtesy of Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fileeutschland_Lage_von_Hamburg.svg The city takes its name, Hamburg, from the first permanent building on the site, a castle whose construction was ordered by the Emperor Charlemagne in AD 808. In spite of being destroyed by the Vikings in 845 and by King Mieszko II Lambert of Poland in 1030, Hamburg overcame the occupations of Valdemar II of Denmark (1201 and 1214), the devastating Black Death Plague in 1350, in 1189, by imperial charter, Frederick I "Barbarossa" granted Hamburg the status of an Imperial Free City and tax-free access up the Lower Elbe into the North Sea. Upon the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, the Free Imperial City of Hamburg retained its special privileges becoming a sovereign state with the official title of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Hamburg was briefly annexed by Napoleon I to the First French Empire (1810–14). Russian forces under General Bennigsen finally freed the city in 1814. Hamburg reassumed its pre-1811 status as a city-state in 1814. The Vienna Congress of 1815 confirmed Hamburg's independence and it became one of 39 sovereign states of the German German Confederation (1815–66). Now, about its Thaler coinage. 1 Dreiling = 3 Pfennig or 1/4 Schilling or 1/128 Thaler 1 Schilling of 1823-1832 = 12 Pfennig 1 Sechling of 1803 and 1807-1817 and 1823-1839 = 6 Pfennig or 1/2 Shilling or 1/64 Thaler 1 Sechling of 1809 and 1876 = 2/3 Thaler (Photos courtesy of coinarchives.com unless noted otherwise) Drieling: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1054181&AucID=978&Lot=4302&Val=97678fc298e626b268aa468130a0fde4 worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1099&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm2351Dreiling(3Pfenning;1/4Schilling;1/128Thaler)(1807-1809)&query=GermanStateofHamburg worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1096&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm2751Dreiling(3Pfenning;1/4Schilling;1/128Thaler)(1855)&query=GermanStateofHamburg Schilling: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1054182&AucID=978&Lot=4303&Val=e54a9678169657c6531fca49a5c286d8 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1052143&AucID=974&Lot=2008&Val=b6543165759630acb4316868f23f926a worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1100&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm1601Schilling(1725-1768)&query=GermanStateofHamburg worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1376&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm4561Schilling(1778-1795)&query=GermanStateofHamburg worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1101&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm2461Schilling(1817-1819)&query=GermanStateofHamburg worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1097&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm251.11Schilling/12Pfennig(1823-1832)&query=GermanStateofHamburg Sechling: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060547&AucID=982&Lot=6986&Val=b2a524650b8170ac7402693ce96feb3e worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc11/z1098&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm2771Sechling(1808)&query=GermanStateofHamburg worldcoingallery.com photo http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/display.php?image=nmc2/73-hm276&desc=GermanStateofHamburgkm2761Sechsling(1855)&query=GermanStateofHamburg Thaler: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=985118&AucID=916&Lot=2056&Val=5b16576da27ff230901344fa142f977a http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=985125&AucID=916&Lot=2063&Val=2d8a23c3225559870d981698a9c2e662 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1054180&AucID=978&Lot=4301&Val=2180824c85fd223debef1b1e3e4f50be Under Swedish Annexation http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1058981&AucID=981&Lot=5139&Val=2d45db07a6cc4c4fa74034d2681e7855 Back to own sovereignty http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1032686&AucID=953&Lot=382&Val=eab5a8a5e6e9925b22ad0673326865df http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1032687&AucID=953&Lot=383&Val=2c79b3e543913e057a7560ec5fc6ed41 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1032688&AucID=953&Lot=384&Val=7293975e695cc670cea97f72a8d39dd5 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1004618&AucID=931&Lot=8249&Val=fa9bb6e32045c33066224b36fa264ec3 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1017277&AucID=938&Lot=1597&Val=c51716fedb57d86596610ba68b08ec73 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1017280&AucID=938&Lot=1600&Val=45bd32ec5442451079e2d5fce8a322ac Dukat: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1064188&AucID=985&Lot=4378&Val=49c01591c801d3c7fe55960f1b9ec652 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1064190&AucID=985&Lot=4380&Val=144c6232bfe51fe07bd9dbf4f355553f Under Swedish Annexation: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1058875&AucID=981&Lot=5033&Val=d9f9616f7b7486364f03dcc3cc5bc1da Under Hamburg's own sovereignty: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060543&AucID=982&Lot=6982&Val=bf64866cacacbd6db41c5f9a179aeca6 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060544&AucID=982&Lot=6983&Val=565c3dd45802a122d37f6b8c70e4377d http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060545&AucID=982&Lot=6984&Val=881de8fa9d3e69036f77db1a8acb211c http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060546&AucID=982&Lot=6985&Val=e1172c402a8118209e036c82865e03e7 http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=1060552&AucID=982&Lot=6991&Val=86a339ce387c63cee9b6f6abf620a3cf Like any of those coins? Clinker
Yes, especially those Portugaleser pieces. Thanks for showing them here, Clinker! (Have been busy lately, so I did not look at all the topics.) The two Swedish Occupation coins are, judging from the object descriptions, from elsewhere though: The first one (5 taler) is a Pomeranian piece, and the second one (Dukat) is from Mainz. What is also interesting about coins from Hamburg is that they can easily be recognized - pretty much every coin (except for those beautiful Schautaler pieces maybe) has the CoA of Hamburg, the gate with the three towers. By the way, even today Hamburg is a state of its own ... Christian
Thank you, Clinker, for putting up a wonderful and informative posting! I will have to look back at this when I have more time and look at all those links you have given.
