Really sorry to hear about this, Mat. At least nobody got hurt and that is the main thing. Having a store front selling valuable small items like coins or jewelry is bound to attract criminals looking to rip off honest working folk. The jewelry store in my small town has been broken into twice in 2 years...... Have you ever thought about continuing your business but not from a store front but from the internet and a P.O Box. I know you lose the intimate contact with both buyers and sellers that way, but it should also reduce the chances of being the victim of crime. I know that if I was looking to start up in the coin business, I would do it via the internet only (at least as far as the selling part is concerned). Once again, glad you did not get hurt. Eduard
Of course LD knows more about this, but I would guess that the storefront is very valuable to keep open. Most b&m shops in the US make a sizable amount of thier profit from buying from the general public. This is the key component usually for shops here. If it were only selling, then the storefront would probably not be as important, as many buyers are used to buying at third party locations such as shows. The general public isn't as much, and want a business they can visit to sell their coisn to.
Some thoughts on this topic after a local club meeting last night. One savvy member said that the heavily advertising cash for gold, hotel buyers, etc., traffic in a lot of stolen goods without fear of law enforcement. I thought there was a hold period for all new purchases by pawn shops, coin shops, and other buyers. That is the law in New Hampshire, maybe other states are behind the curve with laws and enforcement. How widespread are the use of Web Cams? These are available readily and not that expensive. Even dummy units can be attached to the outside of a building and are motion activated. Why aren't people being hired for security when that is critical at shows, etc. and what would be the least expensive charge this would entail in various situations? Video surveillance is not that expensive, and at least gives the business a record of what happened and a physical record.
Here are a couple more pieces I am missing but had pictures of. This is in an old ANACS MS67 holder. 1947 P.
How tragic!! So sorry for you're sons loss and to the family. I pray they catch the scumbag(being kind due to the family-friendly forum) and he goes away for a long, long time. That's absolutely sickening to hear a young life my daughter's age ended in such a heinous way.
Sorry to hear of you loss, but it was not me. I did not get to Indianapolis until after 4 and that was pm to boot.
I wish you hadn't cut off the ANACS slab. I can only see a sliver of the hologram but it doesn't look like one I recognize.
I know... the only reason I had these pictures was to see if I could get the color to show in the slab... I couldn't so I ditched the pics... but I found them in my comps trashcan.
I cannot read the serial numbers on this set ... but is this the stolen item? Maybe someone with better eyes can read the numbers. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wild-West-C...07?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item27beabccf3
So we decided to do some deep cleaning at the shop today. We decided to move our cases a little to get between and under them cleaned. Our cases are usually screwed together for stability and safety. Apparently our burglar in his haste to scoop up notes dropped this one and it fell between our cases. So he never got it in the first place, it just ended up going to a weird place when he dropped it that we couldn't see. WOW what luck!
