I was looking at my 23 Peace Dollar last evening and thought this was interesting....It appears to be a nice rim cud (sp) and a deep die gouge just off it.
Hope the pics show it well...

I don't see a cud. A cud is a break on the rim which enters the field.

Okay, so would this be PMD?

If you're referring to a deformation of the metal on top of the rim and right of the gouge, I'm not sure what caused that.

Maybe. The gouge in the coin could be PMD or it could be a planchet defect. I'm inclined to lean towards the latter because of the slight crack that can be seen in the rim beyond the gouge.

As for the small raised portion on top of the rim and south of the gouge - yes, that does appear to have been caused by a slight scratch or tiny gouge in the outer edge of the die.

It didn't appear to be PMD to me either, the rim edge itself is undamaged and under magnification that area is raised. I thought perhaps it was a vam type but have not been able to determine that.

It could also be a non retained strike through.

I'm just not sure, all I know is how it appears to me looking under magnification. Tonight I will take a look at it under a microscope at work and see if something looks different.. Wish it would take photos but it doesn't..
