Hey everybody. I got this dime in change about a month ago. It's a 1965 and it appears that something protected a portion of it while the reverse and the other half were exposed to a harsh environment for quite a while. The actual color of the toning is like a brown Lincoln cent. I thought it was too neat to throw in the change bank. It's been sitting on my kitchen table looking at me for weeks. I've decided to give it away here. It's probably not much of a contest or worth much but I thought it was a cool find in change. I figured somebody here might like it more than I do. I'll send it to somebody in a new air-tite with a black ring. I'll let this run for a week. If somebody really has a good reason for wanting it for something specific, just PM me and I'll take it into consideration. Otherwise, just post to this thread and I'll randomly pick a winner next Saturday.
I have an idea about the toning. This dime may have been in one of those cardboard coin holders banks used to give away to get you to save a few bucks. If the cardboard had a high sulfur content, it would have toned any part of the coin in contact with it. That would also explain the straight edge to the toning on the obverse. Just a thought. Joe
I agree with bonbonbelly, Something like those old Jerry Lewis "March of Dimes" cardboard donation cards placed at varoius locations.
I want the coin because it is a neat fined to add to a collection I am working on adding for my dad's birth year set. And this coin is very interesting.
I want it because I think the speculation about WHAT cardboard holder it sat in, why, and why for so long, fascinates me.
This reminds me of those cardboard holders our credit union had when I was a kid that you saved dimes in, and they had a heavy paper "pocket" that covered half of the front to keep the dimes from falling out. This could have been stored in one of those folders and it would explain the difference in toning and why only half of the obverse was affected.
Well, it's an interesting dime! My FIRST thought was, gee, he's in the sun! If one were to be looking at it, he/she would (could..) always see 'the bright side', the dawn around the corner... Had I found that dime, I would surely keep it, as I like reminders of bright things to come. Very cool! Lucy
I am interested in the coin because it reminds me of a coin I lost on my honeymoon. My wife and I had gone to Florida and while driving around the area I happened to find a silver dime that had the same toning color as this one does, except it was the full obverse and reverse that was toned. I thought it was a cool looking coin and couldn't wait to put it in my collection. Then one day I couldn't find it and spent time searching the rental car, our luggage, the hotel room, etc., I still couldn't find it. When we left I still didn't have it and think about it all the time.
I saved for four years to bring my mom here from Cuba. Now I am saving to send her back. I have saved all but one 1965 dime to do so. That is why I want this dime ---- so I can send her back.
