Also, you should know it appears very smooth looking when in-hand also, remember that this was done was a scan done @ 1200 dpi not a photograph so you can see all the dirt and every little inclusion at that sort of resolution.

Would you really like to see this in-hand to see it for yourself shoot it if you want (with a camera I'm hoping ) let me know maybe I can make it happen. I'll send it insured and send along my other 2 for verification. I never done anything like this and I have to say that it makes me more than a little nervous sending my stuff to someone that I have never met so you must understand my concern. what are your terms lkeigwin?

 

I don't think anyone is challenging you or your coin. It is a very interesting woody penny, as they all are, and are all unique.
There is always a third party grading company, they can encapsulate it to protect it and give their guaranteed opinion.
That is what I would do if I wanted to know what a coin was exactly.

It's obvious you are very proud of the coin and want to be careful with it. I would be careful with anything I treasured. Good for you.

You should know that to collect on an insurance claim, if it came to that, you would have to prove its value. I don't believe any dealer would say it's worth more than a dollar or two (don't be offended, I'm just trying to be straight!). Just something to consider.

I've always loved 'woodies,' and I think it would be cool to make a year set of them, like 09 to 58. Though they are less common after the 40s.

I am not sure I will ever get a complete set, but I have a lot of them. Some are easy to find, and some are not. You are correct about the difficulty after 1940. In fact, I would say they are difficult after 1934. some dates are almost common. 1921-S is almost difficult to find without some grain on it. 1918 is another commonly grained date.

 

I'm not offended or anything that's quite an impressive reference there, but I was only going to send it to ya' to check it out as you said you was curious about it. I didn't think it was worth a billion dollars, Like I mentioned I'm a philatelist and know that condition, eye appeal and rarity are the constituents of a valuable anything. Thank you.

I know what you meant; It's all good. On second thought it's just probably not worth the hassle monetarily for me for a photo is all I meant. You seem very trustworthy to me even w/o all the references. lol The scan pretty much says it all.
I have some some pretty good camera equipment, albeit only consumer grade stuff. It's a Fuji FinePix S700 on a Targus tri-Pod that I really like. it has a hotfoot attachment I think? I could use but I'm certainly no professional photographer...haha
So why do we need a picture of this? I can provide any angle you may want to see pretty much? It's something my Father gave me and means more than any dollar value anyhow. Thank you.

ya know what? I will. you only get an offer like that once in a lifetime (well I do anyway) so it may actually be very interesting to see and hear the final and proper decision on this matter. I'll get a hold of the proper folks and get the ball rolling... I know I waffled on this but it's all new (people, opportunities, etc) to me again so...if it's still on the table then yes! My wife thinks it would be neat too.
I edited this after looking through copious amounts of older posts and seeing how respected he is and that was the main thing to me. Who would send their stuff to a complete stranger ya know? lol So please believe me when I say No disrespect intended I was just being cautious was all.

Im very honored but I agree it was in bad taste to get all grumpy like that merc & I have apologized and worked it out so lets just please move forward from here. I am now considering sending to lance to have it professionally photographed. I am sort of curious to see what a professional of his caliber <SP? would think of such a coin oddity and how it would look properly displayed. I really don't collect errors but it was a gift and and so I guess I at the least owe it to my Dad to give it the proper respect. -Jay

Well, seeing is believing. I_Love_Silver has a very unusual penny! I am convinced, after examining it in hand, with a good loupe, and after shooting it that it is indeed as mint-struck.

Yes, there are some small environmental problems. You'll note them from the images (they are exagerrated by the picture size). But it is actually a very pretty coin with nice color, smooth surfaces and very few bag hits. I probably wouldn't have it graded but I would certainly keep it with my other favorite raw coins.

That was quick. I would say that is an interesting coin. I don't see much environmental on it . Nearly all I am seeing is lamination due to the alloy mix. The only damage I see is on the reverse. What is going on with that left wheat?
