1976 $2 Bill - folded & misprinted... worth anything?

I wasn't sure if this was the best forum or the "What's it Worth" forum, but that one looked exclusive to coins.

So we were going through some old boxes yesterday... found some old bills and silver coins my parents had from decades ago.

Most interesting was this... it's a mis-printed 1976 $2 bill. It must have been "folded" when it was printed, near the bottom it can be unfolded and the bill isn't rectangular- some of the front is actually printed on the back due to the fold.

I'm not sure how but unfortunately the bill is torn in half- I'm sure if it had any value that severely limits it.

    Any ideas?

Wow. Thats defiently an error but since its in terrible condition and being ripped up, id say $30?? Or atleast thats the most i'd pay for it

Your note displays what is called a butterfly error or a printed fold. These errors are generally worth a lot of money, assuming that the note is intact. in Fine condtion, this note could have brought $500 or so, however in its current condition, it's up to the buyer to make an offer.

A great conversation piece, but I wouldn't know where to start in putting a value to it. I've seen a lot of error notes, a very small percentage with edge tears, (which brings the value down), but I've never seen one for sale that was torn in half. You wouldn't want to tape it together, so as far as what it would sell for is anyone's guess.

Do people laminate bills? If it was laminated or even put between pieces of glass it wouldn't look so bad.

I think dollar bill "doctors" will iron notes to flatten them, notes are basically cloth.

No, never laminate a bill. That will destroy it's value even more, and that's saying something!

Anyone consider that the note could of got the majority of damage at the BEP? Almost looks like the sheet got caught up in the machine, and was somewhere in the middle of deck so it got by the hand inspection?

The cut definitely looks like it started from where the imperfection begins. I was trying to figure out how it happened. my dad was in the vending business but I can't imagine someone would try to put a $2 bill through a bill accepter...
