Got 2 boxes tonight and yes we had some goodies. 38 40%ers, 1 '64, 5 Franklins, and 1 Walker, add that to the 5 this morning and it's been a good day. However, it looks like someone beat me. Great score Inquisitive!

Well not as exciting as some others today, but I'm happy that I didn't reach a 7 box Skunk streak on my halves.

    1 box of Halves: 1 x 1964 Kennedy
1 box of Dimes: 3 x Silver Rosies

    I'm happy!

Hobby hasn't been treating me well lately. Bank I went to yesterday had nothing to spare for me, and todays box of dimes was a skunk. Box of nickels was nice, though... a '23 and 4 wars. Still nothing going on halves, picking up another skunk box from WF tomorrow and asking them to stop ordering halves and instead just order 4 extra boxes of dimes a week... even though they've been rough lately. Should be able to do 3-4 boxes of halves on Friday, as well... so hopefully this week turns around soon, I'm starting to get burnt out.

sweet noobismatist! any good dates in the wheaties? its weird, because i've had 3 boxes out of 30 that had 100+ wheats, but they didn't have any good dates (all in the '40s and '50s), the rest of the boxes have had between 10-25 wheats, but there has been way more variety in them. maybe someone just dumping their common wheat collection.

The tellers at my Chase bank that I've become friendly with called me today with news that someone dropped off $250 in halves and they thought of me before sending them off to the farm in upstate New York. I was there in minutes and bought them all. No silvers but since my (2) half-dollar collections are skimpy at best this is filling in a TON of holes so i consider this a success. Also FINALLY picked up a 1972-S penny I've been searching for several years, as well as some other miscellany. Now I just have to go through my jar of 1982 cents and find a 1982-D zinc lg date and sm date and that book is done like dinner.

    A few questions:

1- Do you think there's any value in starting a THIRD collection with the halves I don't need and selling it off on Ebay as a starter collection for someone? Would obviously be looking for more than face value, think I'd get it? For that matter, what about any other denominations?

2- Any advice on what dimes I should be hoarding other than the obvious silver/barber/mercury?

Presently hoarding all nickels, 1982 and earlier pennies, 2009 pennies, bi-centennial quarters/halves/SBAs, and any of the US Territory and America the Beautiful quarters since they're so darn hard to find.

3- Any advice on things to look out for/hoard as I go through all 500 of the halves tomorrow?

Your guidance and infinite wisdom on such matters is always appreciated but never monetarily reciprocated. ;-). Unless someone is on the Left Coast that needs Philadelphia coins, in which case we could help each other out.

    Thanks, all!

Today at the bank I purchased a 1958D quarter, 2x silver Roosies (1947S, 1957D) and 1x Merc. It is worn down to a nub, but looks like it says 1917. The mint mark, if there is one, looks to be annihilated. I didn't pay face, but I paid less than melt. It was a friend from HS who had them.

I am quite a newbie at this and I was wondering what the terminology is? What is BWR And CWR?

BWR = Bank Wrapped Roll, CWR = Customer Wrapped Roll. I remember when i first asked that question in this thread about 9 months ago lol.

    1. I personally don't think it would be worth it to make a 3rd set in the hopes of selling it. You would have to sell it for 10% over face just to get your money back after fees. I don't see why someone would do that, but then again there are alot of things on ebay that don't make sense. I don't see it being worth it for any other denominations either.
    2. For dimes, I think most people here just edge-check for silver, because the dates are so small and there just really isn't anything worth looking for. If you're going to look through them all anyways, there is a 1982 with no "P" mintmark, and the 1996-W. Also the 2009 is crazy low mintage.
2b. you are hoarding ALL nickels??? lol, why?
    3. For halves, keep any proofs you find, 1987 P&D are keepers, anything after 2002 is NIFC = Not Intended For Circulation (all have extremely low mintages), I also set aside all 1974-D I find to look through them for the Doubled Die Obverse variation, where the "trust" on the front is doubled.

    All imho, good luck.

Went through a box of halves. Got skunked. I don't think I'll be taking these half dollars back as they make a great decoration sitting in a big bowl in my house. Late post went through the box a few weeks ago and the bowl has been enjoying the company of the half dollars every since!

Had $415 of BWR last night of dimes. One gold tinted 1996 dime, not worth anything, but still different. Also found 2 Canadian dimes, including a 2001 International Year of the Volunteer dime. It is very shiny and I can't tell if it is a proof or not. There is a very small "P" on the front but I wasn't sure what that meant, as I knew it wasn't made in Philadelphia.

Thanks for the reply, all great info!
Re: dimes, I do edge check as well as date check each as I need (2) 2011D and (2) 2009D to complete my collection of non-silver dimes, at least. Knew about the 1982 but had not heard of the 1996W. Will have to research that one more and will hold on to any 2009s for fun.
Re: nickels, I've just always liked them and they don't cost as much as quarters to hoard. :)
Great info on the halves, too. Thanks for your time.

It sometimes happens. In my roll searchg, I came across a ton of near-new '79s, '80s and '81s. I figured that someone dumped their mint rolls and floated the coins around town.

I am picking up my first bag ($500) of dimes today. Any suggestions for edge-searching? I am used to doing rolls. Just grab a handful?
