Here are a couple that I found online but I want to get some that are pretty nice to display a few of my nicer Morgans. Any suggestions? Is there anything I need to look out for with the lining? 1 coin box 2 coin box Thanks!
Well ya need to worry about the wood probably more than the lining. Wood puts off acidic gasses that are harmful to coins, so wood is not a recommended storage medium. As for the lining itself, I'd worry more about the glue that holds it in place. They make these things to sell because people think they are pretty, and they are pretty. But most folks are unaware of the harmful properties of wood when it comes to coins. So they buy them, only to find out later that they should not have.
It does not lead to a virus, it's a tinyurl from adfly, so maybe one of the ads looked that way, but i assure you there is no virus. adfly is a legit tinyurl website that has been around for years.
Here's an older thread on the subject (and no "redirect" on this link): http://www.cointalk.com/t66069/
To the OP, old fashioned coin cabinets were ok since they were made from real mahogany. The boxes you posted were cheap wood with a mahogany finish, (meaning stain). This is a horrible environment for coins since most wood gives off chemicals, but the stain and finish will be even worst. THings like this are ok if you want them as a presentation box, but coins should never be stored long term in them.
I've been building/repairing computers for 25+ years, I know what I saw all too well. When I clicked on the URL it redirected about 3 times and poped-up a fake "system scan" which, if followed through, leads to the installation of trojan, fake antivirus or fake "system repair tool". I fix about 2-3 customer computers per week infected with these. Just an FYI, I know what tiny url is and have seen it's links hijacked before.....it happens. This is why I NEVER recommend the service. Not to mention problems like linkrot or just the plain fact that the user clicking on the link cannot inspect it BEFORE they click on it.
Yea, it works for now too....but that doesn't change the fact that I saw what I saw the first time I clicked on it.
There are some acrylic varnishes that I suspect with complete drying time, would not release any dangerous chemicals, nor allow any to pass through to the coins. Should be as safe as most hard plastic holders. I have salvaged some old mahogany table leaves for something interesting later in cooler weather. Thad, have you tried Sandboxie? works with firefox to isolate all browser activity. Not to hijack a thread. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sandboxie_d4993.html http://www.sandboxie.com/
I think I'd stay away from wood too. There are all kinds of resins and commpounds that could be harmful to the coins in the long run. I did see someone was making wooden boxes for slabs a while back, I have no idea where I saw them. Anyway, even though the coins are slabbed it doesn't mean that they are air tight. I wish I had a answer for you but I don't. I would NOT put them in wood. Found the site for the slab boxes I had mentioned, they also hve lots of other storage "stuff" http://www.safepub.com/categories/slabs-graded-coins
I got a "PCGS" wooden box. it works nicely for PCGS coins. Don't store much in it. Acutally need to go though it to clean it up.
