NGC MS65 FSB. My pics aren't very good, but maybe some of you could tell if maybe I have a shot at a green CAC sticker. I find that the spot near the chin isn't as bad as the pics make it out to be. The last 2 pics are shown to highlight the toning. Thanks for any input.
The reverse looks absolutely pristine, with the exception of the TE in STATES. The obverse is spot on, too. I think another day of the week it'd get MS66FB; CAC should be no problem.
This is one of the best Mercs I've ever seen. Sure, it has a shot at the CAC. Thank you for sharing it with us!
I have no idea and no experience with CAC so I can't help there. But I did want to say that's one beautiful merc!!
I think I may resubmit to NGC for a possible upgrade in a few months. That would be really sweet to go from a 65 to a 66. We are talking over $4,000 in value added for that one point! Ill call my friend this weekend who has a good camera and macro lense to get some better shots.
My 2 cents CAC I don't use them! I think John A has made far too much off the Sticker's & if an Anacs CAC rarely add a sticker to them What I would do is send it back to Ngc & see if upgrade to a Star or a Plus! :kewl:
Beautiful Merc! Can you show the entire holder, just so i have a frame of reference for what generation NGC holder this is in? I think a resubmission to NGC for a possible MS66FB is not a bad idea, and it's not that expensive given the possible change in value if it makes the cut. The toning is such that I'm pretty sure NGC would not assign the ★ designation. The ★ is reserved for particularly superb eye appeal. While I think your coin is beautiful, some of the peripheral toning is "blotchy" and quite dark. Nonetheless, thanks for posting this beautiful coin for all to see! I'm excited to see your professional photos soon too! Cheers!
Agreed, a star or a plus would be better... my only gripe with those designations is there are no price lines with these. Is there some magic added value that could be roughly assigned for these, 20%, 30% or something else?
Ill try to take some more pics this afternoon with a digital camera. Ill get the whole slab for you too brg. rev1774, the 1921-D is one of the semi keys in the Mercury dime series. It wasnt cheap
Before you can guess as to the "premiums" paid for the ★ and + coins, it is important that people understand what those designations mean. The ★ is assigned to a coin by NGC when it exhibits exceptional eye appeal. It does not indicate any information or opinion about the grade of the coin. It is an aesthetic designation given usually for coins with appealing toning and/or stellar luster. The ★ is used slightly differently for proof coins, but for business strike coins it means the coin in "pretty" as judged by a jury of NGC graders/finalizers. The + designation is assigned to coins by NGC when a coin is considered "premium" for the assigned grade. It is a modifier of the grade of the coin, and does not in any way attest to its particular toning or eye appeal. For example, a coin graded MS66+ differs from a coin graded MS66 in that the "+" coin almost made the cut as an MS67. This designation is used in a similar way by PCGS to denote a "premium quality coin for the assigned grade". A coin can receive both the ★ and the + designation. -------------------------------------------- Now, after all of that, I will give my input based on what I have seen over the past year or so for coins with these designations. The ★ designation coins are almost impossible to price or assign a value because it is inherently a subjective designation. I have seen ★ coins go for about the same as Numismedia Fair Market Value, and I have seen others go for 10 or even 20 times the FMV. It all depends on if two people bidding on the coin both really love the coin. Toning premiums are a wide range of values, and almost impossible to predict or assign value. On the other hand, the "+" designation is related to the grade of the coin. Thus, the "+" coins (in my experience) are generally priced between the two grades involved. For example, an MS66+ coin will be valued somewhere between MS66 and MS67. Suppose the MS66 has a value of $500 and the MS67 has a value of $2000. An MS66+ would likely fetch around $1000 (about a 33% premium of the difference between the two grades). If the higher grade coin is essentially a population 1 or 2 coin, then the little sister "+" coins of the grade below can fetch much more. In summary, for the "+" coins you have a window of likely values, but for the ★ coins you are pretty much clueless. I don't suspect that "+" graded coins will ever feasibly be listed in a values guide. There are already 11 grades between MS60 and MS70 that can be priced, I don't think adding more will really add much to market. On a related note, if you participate in the NGC registry, the ★ and + designations are given point premiums for Registry Sets. As an example of the point premiums, if an MS65 coin is given 100 points, and the MS66 coin is given 400 points, then the following coins are given incremental point values based 1/3 and 2/3 between the grades (Illustrated below). MS65 -- 100 pts. MS65★ -- 200 pts (100 point premium = 300 point difference between MS65 and MS66 x 1/3) MS65+ -- 200 pts (100 point premium = 300 point difference between MS65 and MS66 x 1/3) MS65+★ -- 300 pts(200 point premium, 100 for the ★, and 100 for the +) MS66 -- 400 pts.
Thanks for the detailed explanation and your input of the general way to look at those two based on what they mean to possible added value. I do understand the differences between both designations and sort of figured that for the star designation it was more subjective based on the coin, the eye appeal and how badly someone might want the item in question. The plus designation was more of the mystery since its definition is a bit more solid. But your feeling and explanation does make sense and will help me at least gage the added premiums for both when I am looking at something graded with either or those or perhaps both when they are assigned. I've a 1921 Morgan ms64* I purchased and the pop for those is on the lower side both at and above. I did pay a premium for it, hopefully not way overboard..~~
