Hey CT'ers! What are some of the things you would want to know about your collection? Meaning, if you could see reports about your coins, what would they be? I am working on a reporting section for coin software and would like to hear from other coin collectors. For example: A report on which holes are empty in your album. So you could print out a quick list before you head over to the show. Thanks, greg
I'd want a list of cities that contained five or more collectors who all want to buy my collection. Chris I dunno!
How about a function that automatically does basic statistics and keeps track of user-specified values for individual coins over time. I do this with an Excel spreadsheet and do the stats either in Excel or in SPSS for the more advanced analysis. It's a headache and any software where I can simply enter values on a specific coin and it takes care or the rest is certainly worth the money.
As a life time history buff that happened to stumble on coins at an early age, this is soooo simple, I want to know what my coins have been used to purchase. I want to know who has been using them. I just sold an 1821 1/2 cent from St. Helena on Ebay. Did Napoleon use it? That was his time there and the place definitely did not have a lot of people so its definitely possible. Some other stuff, maybe a mid 1850s 10 Centimes from France, was it used to buy a loaf of bread, some eggs, what? I know this isn't really what you were asking but it was just such a great opportunity to put it out there.
I'd say with a fair degree of certainty that Napoleon might never have come in contact with such a low denomination as a half cent... But honestly, as another person who enjoys not only the beauty and excitement of coins and their collection...I do have lots of fun thinking to myself, "How on earth did a coin in THIS great of shape survive over 100 years...and I find it in pocket change? (Most likely answer: grandchildren.)" As far as reports, I would really love a great, easy, well-designed software that allowed me to view my virtual coin collection (i.e., with photos and stats - when/where purchased, how much, what I've sold, increases in value, etc.) I want software that will automatically gather data from a number of different sources (eBay, Numismedia, PCGS, Heritage, Red Book, etc.) to get up to date values of my coins. I want software that will, based on a digital photo of my coin, give me a "guesstimate" of grade based on certain criteria. I want software that will also automatically download basic stats for coins and allow me to search and sort based on key terms, like baseball stats - what coin has the lowest mintages (but still display price info, so I can say "Hey, that coin has a really low mintage and a lower price point, I should try to find one of those.) Just a few wishes! Most of all, I want the interface to be straightforward but stunningly beautiful - so it displays my coin images in a way that I can truly appreciate them.
