    Check out this planchet flaw!

DSC04118.jpg DSC04117.jpg This was kept in an old PVC flip. When I pulled it out and it came apart in my hand, my first thought was I AM THE STRONGEST MAN ALIVE!!! I JUST RIPPED A NICKEL IN HALF WITH MY BARE HANDS!!! Then I relized it was just a split planchet....

That's too bad, clamshell's bring in a pretty penny and are very neat.

    Funny story though...

I think I like it more now since it split completely apart. Now you can see the inside of the nickel......Way To Cool,,,In my Califorina surfer's accent....LOL

It's great to have both halves of a split planchet like that.

How long do you think it will take before some wiseguy chimes in with the old PMD cry?

Now that you mention it, it does look fishy. Looks like somebody took a saw to it..... :D lol jk
What year is that thing? Looks like a '43/48 but can't tell.

I think it is a 1948. I don't have it with me. I just found the pictures on my computer so I thought I would show everyone.

AWESOME FIND! It's not a big deal it came apart IMO, it's more important that you have BOTH halves.

I paid $2.00 for it. The dealer that I worked with had a red 2x2 box full of errors that he hadn't touched in years. I went to put them in the case at the store and he told me "don't put that junk out, nobody ever buys it" so I offered him $2.00 each for every coin in the box. It had something like 8-9 cent planchets, 2-3 nickel planchets, a quarter planchet, some very large cuds.. It was a great deal for me!

    That is beautiful.

A very instructive piece. Notice how on the inside of the coin the faint images of BOTH sides can still be seen.

Aw, I'll bet he just dipped it in acid. It looks like PMD to me (in my best doubting Thomas accent).

Yea, I forgot to mention that he should immediately soak that in acetone. The hydrochloric acid trapped under that residue will keep eating the surface. The coin MUST be conserved ASAP.

I'll give you $.04 for it since it seems to be about a 1/10 light. No need to thank me. :p

Well, if you submit it, better go to ANACS. PCGS probably won't grade it or authenticate it as an error ?

I wouldn't submit that thing. It's cool to look at, but A. I isn't worth what it would cost me to have it graded and B. I don't need a TPG to tell me what I have or to authenticate it.
