I was looking at a few circulated Barber halves in Numistrust Corporation holders. They appeared to be graded properly, but some looked cleaned. Does anyone know if Numistrust knowingly slabs cleaned coins? I know they aren't one of the top grading companies, but I can deal with figuring out what to pay for what I get in terms of wear. I just don't want to get involved with a grading company that processes cleaned coins without stating it on the label. For example, I think PCI identifies coins as cleaned if they are cleaned even though they are not a well thought of company. ...so many pitfalls in this hobby. Thanks.
Don't trust coins graded by New Mistrust grading company. They are down there with SGS, NNC, ACG, PCI....... Charlie
From what I've seen these guys rate right along side ACC , NNC , PCC ,ACG and a few others , always 2 or 3 grades below what they say. I would say PCI and SEGS are a little better.
Run...I have seen dipped Lincolns sold/slabbed as MS Red's and usually you have to deduct 2 to 4 MS points for the "real" grade. As for circulated grades, you have to deduct their grades by 5 to 40 points...on the average.
Believe it or not, there are plenty of collectors out there who think that all grading companies are equal - that there is no difference between one and another. That is what allows these "bottom of the barrel" grading companies to exist and be so pervasive in the hobby. Ignorance is bliss.
All grading services knowingly slab cleaned coins. Yes, even PCGS and NGC. They just excuse it by saying they are "market acceptable" but they make no mention of it on the label. If it is too blatent they will bag the coins, bu a LOT of cleaned early material does get slabbed by the majors. And if they can do it, why do we get upset when one of the minors does the same thing?
As P. T. Barnum said .... " There's a sucker born every day "... and alot of them are buying on Ebay , no matter the seller.
Numistrust Not To Trust Dear Felow Numismatists, The Grading Company That Goes By Numistrust Corporation Is Doing The Grading Community A Dis Service. I Have Coins Bought From Their Slabs That I Reencapsulated With Ngc. Boy Talk About A Difference. The Coins Were Unc's But Some Were Marked Ms65,ms66,ms67 And Came Back Ms60 And 61's. Big Difference. If Your Getting One Of Their Coins Just Be Advised That They Are Proably 3 Or 4 Grades Lower In Ms State. If You Pay A Fraction Of The Cost Its Ok But A Coin At 65 Or 66 Goes For A Lot More Money Than A 60 Or 61. Buyer Beware.
Maybe the darn thing is an outright counterfeit. Maybe the coin is VF details, cleaned, net VG10. Rather than have it in an NCS holder which tells the world it's harshly cleaned, they prefer it in an NTC holder "advertised" as AU50. Ready for e-bay ! I've often suspected that the submitter is the one doing the cleaning, knowing he can send it to his cousin Vinnie over at NTC.
Until it's time to sell ! Part of the problem is a buyer doesn't necessarily know s/he's been hosed until many years down the line. They're holding an NTC coin, overgraded with problems, thinking all is well. It's like a time bomb.
If You Buy There Coins And It Says Its A 63 You Can Bet Its No More Than A 60. If The Coin At 63 Is Say $100 But The Selleris Only Asking $35 Then If You Only Wanted A 60 That Good.
Really? I'd like to see a correctly graded Numistrust slab. RUN AWAY FROM ALL SECOND AND THIRD TIER SLABS, particularly as a newbie. They are a minefield and you're essentially blind. If you must buy a coin before you can grade for yourself, I'd suggest sticking to PCGS or NGC slabs as to limit your downside. You can (and will) make mistakes, so make them cheap.
p.s. EVERY TPG SLABS AND GRADES CLEANED AND EVEN ARTIFICALLY TONED COINS. The call them "market acceptable". Don't fall into the trap that TPGs will only slab problem-free coins -- it ain't true.
Ntc Like I Said Their Grades Are 3 Or 4 Grades Off. Hence A Coin They Have Marked Ms 65 Is More Likely To Be A Ms 60 Or 61 .
Never, ever count on that. It could be worse. I used to play the game "they're 3 points high, bid accordingly". i.e. they say MS65, I'll bid as if it's an NGC MS62. Never again. It just ain't right. Evaluate coins on their merit. If low-end TPG, forget the slab entirely. Treat it like a raw coin.
I would agree for MS coins in particular. But the coin I was looking at was a lower grade circulated coin that in my opinion was properly graded but cleaned. I was assessing the coin, not the slab; but this prompted my original question about NTC in general.
