I just received my 2011 September 11 National Medals that I had ordered from the US mint. They look awesome!!! I got from both Mint Mark P/W.
I dont understand how that design has ANYTHING to do with the concept of 9/11....? It's like the had it predesigned for any disaster, it is very vague. But I digress, congrats!!
I really don't care for it either. It just feels uninspired to me. I would at some point like to see a commemorative coin depicting the 9/11 memorial though. From the photos, it looks like a very nice job was done with that.
Well it looks like two narrow columns in the background, and the squiggles are representing the new memorial with the rushing water, while they are beautiful, the design could have been much more detailed and looks quickly done.
I like the eagle and the background to the eagle, but the coin is too vague and unmeaningful with "honor hope" on the reverse. And on the front, the torch is O.K. but the rendition of lady liberty is uninspired and reminds me of some 1940's european design of a peasant woman. It doesn't inspire me to want this one. Why no mention of Sept 11 if this is a remembrance or the WTT's or anything. So artsy-fartsy in it's lack of relevence to the actual events. Sorry, forgot to add that that is my opinion, and you are to be congratulated at getting a commemorative that you reallly like! I had no intention of putting you down for this, and if you like it that is good!
Isn't that the way it sometimes is? One person loves a coin and another can't quite see having it. Vive la difference!
Now that's a really nice looking pin. Would have liked to see that design on the coin (flag, NY skyline, PA, and Pentagon).
I will not be wasting my money on this medal. The design has nothing to do with remembering 9-11. Overpriced for a medal IMO.
A lot of coins and medals that commemorate things don't do so in obvious ways. Take the peace dollar for instance. A beautiful design by many collector's standards, but it may not be plainly obvious it was designed to commemorate the end of WW1. If you read history, you'll see many of our past circulating coins were designed for similar purposes in mind, even though most people will never realize it. With that in mind, the 9/11 medal falls in line with some of great works of art in that it signifies what it's supposed to...you just might have to take the time to study and understand the symbolism to see it. Reminds me of 7th grade art class --- mandatory. So I'm in art class and we have a project we have to do in two days. Which is to take a 16 X 20 board and create something that is "art". I started drawing some realistic animals, but had trouble with the proportions, etc., 'cause I'm really not naturally talented that way. Teacher comes along, sees what I'm doing, says that's not art, and to wash it off in the sink and start over. I do so, with her help, but the colors don't come off all the way and it's all smudged and horrid. So I get mad and start taking dirty browns, etc and rubbing it all over willy-nilly, washing it off, doing it over same way 2-3 more times. Next day she praises it and give it an "A". I hated it, knew it wasn't "art" and did poorly in her class the rest of the year. Years later, many more classes in school, regular and college, appreciate artists like Van Gogh, and many of the Masters. Totally enjoyed the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia and a number of famous museums that have real artwork in them also. Saw a few shows of weird stuff called art in various places and even more pretentious write-ups/explanations of the same, but thought it a load. Kind of applies to what I'm seeing here. You can have your opinion, but in mine, it's no where near the masters and I hardly have to study and understand the symbolism to see it. As I said before, one person's opinion of a coin can be one thing and another totally different. Again....vive la difference!
That was my point, Kasia. Art is subjective, but it's meaning is not. For instance, nobody cares that Lord of the Rings was written as a warning to the evils of war, or that Alice in Wonderland was really a mathematical puzzle that only a seasoned expert could decode. We see whats on the outside, even when there is deeper meaning. BTW, any teacher who has the audacity to say to anyone, "thats not art" is not a teacher and not an artist. Been there myself. Guy
When I first saw the design I wasn't too impressed. I thought it was ok but not great. I attended a coin show last Friday and saw the medals in person and was impressed by how much better they looked "in the flesh" so to speak versus the design renderings. I ended up getting 1 of each mint mark and the dealer was selling them for a little less than the Mint and no shipping cost. So even though they are a little expensive I saved a few bucks getting the medals at the show versus ordering from the Mint
The Lord of the Rings, like Harry Potter was originally written as bedtime stories for the authors children.
Thanks guys again for the comments. But I agree with coleguy. and by the way i dont think I paid too much for them cause when I got to ordered them The mint had sent me an email to order them before a certain date and i would get them for $56 dollars instead of the $66 dollars that they are charging now.
