Bored at my office so I thought would have some fun. Have this Morgan which I purchased back in 1989 or 1990, graded by PCGS (Old Holder). Was curious as to what some members thought PCGS graded it back then. Hope the photographs came out OK....Thanks
My 2 cents If you do have it re-graded ???? MS-63+ or MS-64 Very nice 80-S I not saying I see a Vam or over-date **If it were mine I would pay for details you may have a Vam or an over-date. Pcgs won't add anything unless you pay for it. grader could see an over-date or vam if details fee is not payed on the order all Pcgs will do is grade it.** Pcgs won't do anything for free. :kewl:
I doubt this coin is undergraded. 80-S Morgan's are so common and they have always been hard on them...even back then. This coin is no better than a 63 today IMHO. I doubt they graded it any lower back then and even if they did, it's not worth having it resubmitted.
I'm leaning with the 63 crowd, but I don't think it's as easy to find undergraded specimens any more. Most of them have already been cracked and/or resubmitted. Chris
I agree with you...except this coin's history says it has been owned by the same owner for years. Sometimes you can find undergraded coins with that history.
I think the first 'grading standards shift' across the coin hobby for MS Morgans actually took place in the mid to late 80's. So it doesn't surprise me that your coin graded as a MS64. Check out this second generaton ANACs 'slab' really just a plastic envelope, from Dec 1985. This coin was graded MS 63/63 (OBV/REV). I think it would grade a 64 today easy. I wasn't collecting back then, but I'm sure some on this forum were. Any old timers care to weigh in?
The owner said he has had this coin since 1989/90. Based on that history, I assume that it hasn't been combed over several times for resubmission...as many OGH coins have. That said, I don't this coin is undergraded and certainly wouldn't be upgraded.
Have had these in my collection since I bought them from Elesmere Numismatics.... Anyone remember them?
