Hello I'm hoping this coin is as old as I think it is, It looks like its either 1774 or 1704. Any ideas, is this even a US coin?
The king portrayed is George II of Great Britain. It's definitely neither a 1704 (since the portrait would feature Queen Anne), nor a 1774 (since it would feature George III). Looks like it could be a 1754 halfpennny (if it's a little bigger than a quarter).
Thank You, I believe its a 1734, when I held it upside down it seem to show a 3, And you can just make out the center line and the outer bottom tip, in the above pic, I got it medal detecting in PA.
Not that unusual though. Every day coins are dug up that have been in the ground for thousands of years, so 250 is still just a baby!
Nice find. If it were mine I'd soak it in some olive oil for a month or two and loosen up some of the gunk. It will likely look a lot better after that! Very cool find!!! :thumb:
Well I have cleaned some ancients in my day. I don't see much more detail to be revealed really. I would simply scrape off the dirt on the surface, (center of coin), with something softer like brass, and coat with Renwax. Putting in olive oil will simply darken the coin with no other appreciable results in my eyes. Chris
Thanks for your help all and kind remarks, Its now bouncing back and fourth between a three and a 5 and the 4 looks to have an outer tilted verticle line 1 to 6 on the outer cross serif 4/ but on the serif. I'll have to get some of this dirt off, I'll try and post more pics later, off to the docs. Thanks again.
