I just purchased an 1883 Brazil 100 reis coin on eBay. The seller said there were only 2,700 minted. I don't have a 19th century Krause so I can't check but I thought I'd better buy it just in case. Can anyone tell me if that is accurate and what the approximate value is?

Its right, it lists 2,700 minted, for UNC is $70, for Fine its .75 cents

Thanks. I think the prices for Brazilian coins are seriously low for their mintages. I'm stocking up now because some day people are going to wake up to these.

You could be right. Its not a bad bet since Brazil is a large country on its way up economically.

There are tons of world coins with low mintage available cheap. If you like rarity I would recommend getting the Krause book on 19th century. I have many coins with similar mintages. Always remember though its only rare if someone wants it. Demand creates rarity as much as supply. Coming from the US its weird since demand here is so great a coin with a 200,000 mintage, where most of them were saved, is called "rare".

You're right, medoraman. That's why it seems so strange when something like the 1909 S VDB Lincoln cent with a mintage of 484,000 can be about $700 in G-4 and a foreign coin with a mintage of 2,700 can be worth 75 cents in fine. But I think about it like if there are only a few of these around, then when I see one for sale I'd better buy it because who knows when I'll see another one? I like Brazilian coins and I think they're a good investment.
