1935 H $1 Silver Certificate Strap... What to do???

Hey gang!

I picked this up today. I'm thinking about sending the whole thing in to PCGS currency with a min grade. 68EPQ's are selling for around $100 each right now. 69EPQ's around $1,000.

Anyone have any thoughts about breaking up an original strap? I'm torn.

I thought about this...sorry I couldn't decide what I think you should do. It is indeed a very difficult decision. One hand it would be nice to get them graded individually, on the other hand it is an original strap. Toss a coin?

 

Matt, it depends are you in it for the money or will you be keeping it? Second question, could you make more money seeling them individually or as a whole? If i was in your shoes, I would try to make the most from it, so if that meant breaking it up then I would if it doesnt then don't.

 

Hmmm, that would be a tough decision.. Guess it comes down to whether you feel the notes will grade 68 or if several or all of them could hit 69 then decide...

 

I wasn't aware you could send them in with a minimum grade. Fr.1618's graded 68 & 69 are few and far between. I don't have access to the PCGS Pop report, but PMG shows 901 notes graded with only 9 reaching 68EPQ and 2 reaching 69EPQ. My guess is grading fee's will be close to the purchase price of the strap.

 

Well, if you are keeping them for yourself I would not break the strap. You know what you have so i wouldn't need a TPG to tell me. Now if you are going to sell them then you probably will make more having them graded. I wish you the best. If you do have them graded let us know how they did!

 

PCGS shows 1,244 graded with 48 68PPQ (3.9%) and 5 69PPQ (0.4%).

 

There are collectors that would prefer the whole pack instead of individual notes. That does have cool factor, when you consider how unlikely it is getting to find notes like those now.

 

I agree... That is part of my thought process. I don't plan to keep them. The strap is cool.. but will only sell for $1,000-$1,500 as a strap.

If notes grade at 67EPQ they are worth $20-$25 each.. and more for higher grades. The grading fees for a bulk submission aren't crazy either. These notes could then be shipped to Heritage or Teletrade and all sold... It's really a tough call.

The parted out aspect is what will make original straps pretty rare in the future. As for that banded bunch there, they are indeed attractive notes and lots of + graded ones too - a bit unusual for older notes that tend to have corner bumps, and counting flicks. Come to think of it, would PCGS or PMG grade the whole pack as a pack instead of individually?

 

But thats not an original band right? That band looks like ones I can get from the bank right now. Isnt it possible for someone to have a lot of high grade notes and get a current unused band and put it on the group?

 

It's sequential. I do think however the band is a replacement.

The question is can you sell all 100 broken up, I would think yes and with that answer I think you answered your own question using the math above.

I am jealous, that would be very cool to own as is and I agree with SM, they are probably very hard to find this way!

 

This really is a no brainer financially. However, historically, leads to the dilema. If it were mine, a collector, I would keep it the way it is. If I were a dealer, like you, I would ship them out for grading. I suspect the band is a replacement also. Just my opinion,

But the 1935 H Series must be rarer, no? I personally have never seen 1935 H series... I truely didn't even know the series existed. I thought the cut off of '35s was 1935G (half no motto and half w/ motto).
