I was reading about Kennedy halves doubled died obverse on the 1974-D coins, so I went through a roll and found a 1974 with no mint mark. On the reverse the word DOLLAR is doubled. Has anyone ever seen one? I'll try to scan it tomorrow and see if it can pick up the details. I've looked at the coin from different angles through a loupe to make sure I wasn't seeing shine, but it is clearly a double die.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to CT, Steve!

A picture is absolutely necessary here.

There is quite a difference between a true doubled die and machine doubling.
If your half shows flat, shelf-like doubling, it is machine doubling, and carries no premium.
If the lettering is raised and shows clear separation of the serifs, you most likely have a doubled die.
You must post a photo here for me and other CTers to be able to offer educated opinions.

I have found MANY, MANY Kennedy halves with doubling on the letters on the reverse. They were all machine doubling. It is very common. The doubling you are looking for on the 1974-D is on the "TRUST" word on the obverse. I've found about 10-12 of them over the past couple of years.

    Good luck!

Here is a scan of the coin. It was hard to get the detail. kennedyhalfDD.jpg
My scanner darkened part of the photo, the D doubling didn't show up too good.

Ok, I was just looking at the difference. So I'll assume this isn't a double die.

The doubling looks flat which makes me believe that it is machine doubling.

I fully agree with Larry. This form of doubling is quite common on the clad Kennedy Half's.

I checked 17 rolls. Oh well, at least I got one 1965 silver clad.

I just found this 1974-D Kennedy Half Dollar in a roll that I bought at the bank today and believe that it may be a Double Die, I just started collecting this past winter though and do not know as much as many of you folks do about the different varieties of errors. If anyone might be able to lend me some knowledge I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Repeat. MDD is quite common on Kennedy Half Dollars.
