Hi All,Are all new ngc holders scratch resistant or just the ones with edgeview? I bought a 2011 coin in ngc holder on ebay and the holder has lots of scratches. It does not have edgeview.thanks.
The scratch resistant holder comes with the edgeview holder, they are a pair that NGC only does together, so it is not scratch resistant, you have to pay $5 extra for the special holder.
Funny...I hate slab scratches but I don't like the NGC scratch resistant one because if it does get scratched it is virtually impossible to polish out. The others, especially those from PCGS, are easy to clean up. Just pick up some plastic polish at an auto parts store. Meguiar's PlastX works great and the nozzle doesn't clog like SlabRenu's. Lance.
I like the NGC slab more than PCGS's, the edgeview makes me like it even more, as for large scratches, I don't see why they would get them unless you bought it with a scratch or someone stepped on it, as all slabs really do are sit there and get looked at every once and a while while protecting the coins, you should reholder them at the next show with onsite grading. And I just made one of the longest run-on sentences ever
Have you ever watched dealers at shows toss slabs around on their display cases? Or have you ever pawed through a random box of slabbed coins? Slabs scratch constantly and easily. Even those delivered fresh from the TPG's sometimes come with scratches. Thankfully polish works well on all except scratch-resistant slabs. As a collector of early copper and capped bust halves I too appreciate seeing edges. But I have two issues. One, the prongs ruin photos. And two, the prongs hide more of the edge they touch. I bought a very nice, scarce 1843 large cent (petite head, large letters) at the June Heritage auction in an NGC prong holder. It was destined for my Dansco and when I cracked it out I discovered a large rim ding hiding under the prong. Major bummer. NGC offered to reslab it for me at the same grade but I couldn't see stiffing another collector. Lance.
Hmm, I see your point, maybe they aren't as scratch resistant as they promise if they scratch touching other slabs in a box. The prongs do get in the way of photos, but overall I think they just add to the good look of the slab. Another thing to think about though, is if you leave the coin in the slab, how will you see the whole coin? Something has to hold it up, and it is better to see most of the edge than none.
The scratch resistant and non-resistant shells are both used for edge view slabs. I do not know of any visual way to tell the two types apart. If you submit a coin for gradiing it will come back in an edge view slab, but if you don't pay extra for the scratch resistant shell it will be in a regular shell. The only submissions that automatically receive scratch resistant shells at no extra charge are the Express and Walk Through pricing levels. This it per NGC submission pricing as of June 2011. http://www.ngccoin.com/pdf/collector_pricing.pdf

Almost everytime comes back in edgeview holders now.
That's what I thought. Maybe because my coin (1oz silver rabbit from perth mint) is too big for edgeview holders. I noticed none of them comes with edgeview on ebay.
