Hey everyone, I was just browsing around Ebay and stumbled upon this amazing looking 1941 D nickel and wanted to share - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1941-D-5c-N...32?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2c5f11e660 I have no affiliation to the seller, was wondering if it may be someone here? Bidding is over $800 with 4+ days left... what do you all think it will go for?
I love it how the bidding is at $810 and the reserve still has not been met. I like the toning, but not the coin enough to pay that price. Maybe it's just ebay hyperinflation.
what does "HM" mean...? Also who told you it was higher than a 67? That seems a little farfetched.... I also agree it's a great coin, but not an $800 coin, nor is it FS IMO. There is a rather distracting ding on the bottom 3 steps that I think should have voided it's designation as such.
That's what I'm talking about.. That and the top 2 steps do meld together some a third of the way over left to right. Give credit where credit is due, but don't say it is what it is not. Bad grade. Buy the coin, not the slab.
I think the grade is pretty much right on, I'm not gonna attempt to regrade it through pictures and will assume the pros at NGC got it right. The bids look to be genuine or at least from genuine users. I'm gonna watch it just to see but i'll stab a guess at $1400. That user has a few nice Mercury Dimes too, check em out if you are bored like me
I could understand agreeing with the grade because of things the pics DON'T show, but to agree with flaws showing is 'buying the slab'... A commonly noted mistake right here on this site. The old 'pros' here on this site warn people of that all the time, and the newbies show up with overgraded coins all the time. The 'pros' at NGC are not infallable, and I believe it was pointed out not to long ago that they take an average of 2 SECONDS looking at each coin they grade.
Most 1941-d MS67FS are selling for around $200, sometimes as low as $100. Another NGC star sold for around $900 a few years ago, but doesn't look as good. Only 1 higher grade at PCGS. It might not look as good on hand.
I agree with others, it's definitely not FS. Is it a 67? Probably and I think the seller juiced his pictures a bit, not much but just enough to make me think they did something to it.
Well to be honest I didn't even give any thought to the grade when I posted this, I just thought it was a good looking coin and was suprised at how high the price was already. I am agreeing with the grade because I am not really concerned with it and I didn't even look at the steps until you guys started talking about it. Could be a flaw on the case making it look like a hit on the steps, could be the vapor trail from a shooter on the grassy knoll, not really concerned I just like pretty colors, shiny objects distract me too
This little coin gets around, to say the least. It sold on eBay on August 12, 2011 for $399 (or possibly less, as the auction was "ended" because it was no longer available). See auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/1941-D-NGC-MS67-6FS-JEFFERSON-NICKEL-5C-IL9-/360385004886?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item53e89ec556 Then it was posted a couple days later on eBay with a price tag of $1500. It sold on the 15th of August for that price ($1500). See auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/1941-D-Nickel-NGC-MS67-6FS-STAR-Rainbow-Color-Toned-/270800899090?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3f0cfdcc12#ht_572wt_1013 It was the consensus at another coin forum where this was discussed that the pictures in the 2nd auction were "juiced" with contrast and saturation boosting. AND, now this most recent auction with a current price of $810 and the Reserve still not met....leads me to believe that either the person who paid $1500 is having buyer's remorse, or they are trying to make a quick flip of the coin for a profit. I'd stay away from this coin if I were you.
So how do you know its the same coin from the first auction? ok i did go see where he bought the coin from the one guy
