Hello all! I have been on and off of CoinTalk for a while now and that has been due to the time I have had to dedicate to the hobby. I now have more time and I want to start collecting again. I am in Brazil and thought I would start a collection of Brazilian coins. Does anyone here collect Brazilian coins and, if so, could you offer some advice to get started here? For instance, I am interested in getting some proof sets to start. Anyone know the best way to get them or if they are as readily available as US proof coins? Thanks! Chris
I have some Brazilian coins from about 1921 but they all have holes in them, as I think they were used for a necklace or bracelet. I don't collect them those. I have these because my mom was born in Brazil that year, and she kept them. I don't recall seeing them as anything more than separate coins though.
1921? cool! What denominations? So far I have only 1 older Brazilian coin in my collection. It´s from 1901 and is pretty well warn. I´m hoping to start a more modern set of proofs from here. Anyone else have any experience with modern Brazilian proofs?
They are all 50 Reis. I have 1 1918, 4 1919's, and 2 1921's. All but one of the 1921's are made to be concave or convex, depending on your point of view. All of the coins have two holes drilled in them, so they could be strung for jewelery. Oh well, couldn't just throw them out.
It's funny that you post this because I was just thinking recently how much I like Brazilian coins and that I should start pursuing them more aggressively. There is a lot of variety and they seem to have changed their monetary system a few times. I was more interested in the coins from the early 1900s to the 40s. I can't really help with your question but I do think there's a lot out there from Brazil worth collecting.
With the economy booming in Brazil, its just a matter of time before the coins of Brazil explode upward in value much as they already have in China, Russia, and to a lesser extent, India. If you want to catch that wave when it comes in, you don't want to be sitting on modern proof sets when its time to cash out. There are loads of nice 19th century silver coins available from Brazil for reasonable prices, and if you can afford gold, the upside potential on some of the coins is almost unlimited in my opinion.
Brazilian Coins Hi there, I don't know much about coins... but I have some brazilian coins from 1800, from empire...(sorry for the english). Edited, buy/sell/trade offers must be in advertising subforums after 10 posts. Jim
Hi, I just started collecting Brazilian coins again after a hiatus of about 10 years. I got 4 new ones over a 1 year period from late 2012 to late 2013. My best is a coin of Dom Pedro I. While I don't always buy slabs, it's becoming more common for non-US coins these days: this specimen is an ms-63. Are there any clubs in Sao Paulo for coin collectors?
