I am new to coin collecting, and I inherited a large load of coins. The relative who left me these coins had a bunch of old books from the 60s that look like magazines that highlight error coins. I had no clue (nor did anyone else) that she was a coin collector. She left a handwritten list of many coins listed as errors in the older wheat and indian head cents but nothing on the nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars. I have this 1951 coin that has a mishapen bur on the rim. Under magnification, it is not something that happened before the coin was made and looks like a piece of metal was crushed into the rim's edge of the coin when it was first made. Is this considered an error coin and worth anything other than just the 50 cents face value? Sincerely
Sorry, as already stated, it's simply post mint damage. No error. Worth it's weight in silver. Welcome to the forum and the hobby though!
Thank you for the information as I appreciate it very much, and also thank you all for the welcome. I am very new to coin collecting, but I'm gaining interest. I didn't even know the coin was worth more than .50 cents value and had no clue that it was silver and had value. Clearly, I have much more to learn. I'm lucky to have found Coin Talk online, and I'm sure I'll find coin collecting to become an itch in my ribs of sorts. I have collected belt buckles for years, which are designed similar to coins in terms of of the 3D relief designs, so this is going to be quite a great experience for me. Have a great week.
