I am a teller at a bank and am just recently getting into collecting bills. I have learned a great deal about coins from this forum and look forward to learning about bills. I recently have just been looking for star bills. I am the vault teller so I have around 200k going through my hands each week. I have been placing the star bills aside but have no idea which ones are keepers. Any information or tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

You need to buy the "Standard Guide to Small Size US Paper Money". Google it anf you will see what additional information you need to find the book. Good Luck! BTW: There are things beyond stars you should be looking for.

Currency is a lot like coins.......you need to have a guide (book) and be able to determine grade.

More than the officers, regular tellers etc in a bank - you are to me the most important person there - the one I have lots of conversations with, give gift cards to etc. Kind of like the quartermaster in the army, the most important person anywhere is the one that knows what goods are there.

If you check out the ebay pages on star notes you will learn quickly that star notes are overrated unless you know what people are looking for. Time to look for a good book on the subject. Personally I would focus on the coins. good luck!

I was in the same position a few years ago. I would purchase the above suggested book and become familiar with it. I never found anything extremely valuable...but I did find some nice pieces. Just be sure to fins the balance between doing your job well and still keeping an eye out for things. Remember, you're primary objective needs to be to do your job well. Have fun. :)

I have to agree with all of the prior posters on this one. Do a good job first and go through the currency second. Purchase a guide book and become familiar with grading scales, varieties, etc before you cherry pick the notes. If you can keep most in the damage section of your drawer, then you will have more time to look through them once you become familiar with the basics. I use Standard Catalog of Paper Money, 29th Edition and you can find the 27th or 28th relatively cheap on Amazon or other online booksellers.
