I had brought a roll of wheaties a few months back, and one of the pennies was blank on both sides? Is it common for coins to go through inspection without anyone noticing both sides are blank?
Does it have an upset rim? If so, it is a planchet. Without the upset rim, it is a blank, and you would have a hard time proving that it actually came from the Mint. I know, because I have a dime blank (copper) that I can't get certified despite meeting the weight and diameter requirements. Chris
I believe so not 100% sure? Still new to coin & papper money collecting. Will send U a pic later today.
The US Mint in Denver would give these out to YN's that went on the tour. In 2005, the US Mint had a product called Collecting America's Coins: Beginners Basics Which contained examples of a 2005-S Kennedy Proof, 2005 P and D Roosevelt Dimes, 2005 P and D Lincoln Cents, and a cent planchet along with a description of the coining process.
The mints used to give cent planchets (blank coins) away at tours. I imagine they sell them in the gift shops now though ?
The only place I've seen the US Mint "selling" the blank cent planchets were in the set I displayed above. Other than that, they were given to the YN's on the US Mint tours.
