New in my new morgan collection - Morgan 1921- minted in Philadelphia. - And how do you think the quality of the coin ? Remind everyone that I'm in the beginning in Morgans Dollar - It would be interesting
It looks to me like it has a little wear...I would say it's AU. I can't get a good feel for the luster in the photos but it appears to be pretty dull. That would indicate the coin has been over dipped to remove toning...but it could just be the photos. Either way, the 1921 is the most common Morgan Dollar so this coin probably doesn't carry much of a premium over melt value. That said, it has pretty nice surfaces and as long as there is some luster...it's not a bad example of the series.
A nice starter coin. Edit to add that if your starting on this series I would recomend that you think about buying them in certified holders as many of them are showing up on the market that are counterfited in China.
Thanks! And tomorrow I'll buy a small electronic scales to check the small morgan collection. Morgan weight - it says it should weight 26.73 grams AND Test themׂׂׂ with a good magnet to make sure they are NOT magnetic Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t191428/#ixzz1WveAVmCz Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t191428/#ixzz1Wvdf6GA1
Was looking at the head feathers where they hit the breast. "Wing 3" was more rounded. The others were more L shapped.
OK, maybe I've become too cynical. With all the talk about Chinese counterfeits floating around, every time a new poster says "I got this silver/trade dollar, what do you think?" and it doesn't look right, I look for things that don't match up with what I know. It's like doing those "find the differences in the pictures" puzzles in the newspaper. If something doesn't match up, I get suspicious. Here, the '21 Morgan doesn't look right. It could be the poor quality of the OP's pictures. But the OP has already posted pictures of fake Morgan dollars in another thread. So I pay particular attention to the details in the pictures here. In 1921, there were subtle changes made in the original Morgan design. The most obvious changes are the breast feathers on the eagle. However, it also seems that there are subtle differences in the eagle's wing feathers. In my 1921 Morgans, there are two lines dividing groups of feathers running down the wing on the left side close to the breast, just like in previous years. These lines are easily seen in the photo "Wing4". However, one of the lines is not so easily seen in the other three photos (although it can be easily seen in hand, when held at the right angle). In photos I've taken of pre-21 Morgans, this line is much more apparent than in the photos of the 21's.
I agree and in fact a low MS level 21 Morgan can be had for about $5-$10 over melt. I have an NGC slabbed 63 I picked up for $8.50 over melt a couple of months ago.
I think the coin on the scale is a fake. What is interesting to me here is that the coin on the scale does not appear to be the same coin in the first post, even though the dark areas on the two coins match up. Yet while the 2 and the second 1 in the first coin seem to be correct, the 2 and the second 1 in the scale coin seem to be wrong. Also, the lettering in UNUM seems to be OK in the first coin, but it looks a little odd on the scale coin.
I think what's happening is that you are allowing yourself to be deceived by differences in the pics. It's the same coin in both pics. Nor do I see anything that makes me think the coin is a fake. Is it possible it is fake ? Of course. Is it probable that it is a fake ? I doubt it. You should know as well as any of us here that pictures of coins can be quite deceiving. They can show one thing in one pic and something entirely different in another pic - but yet it's same coin. Small changes in the lighting or the angles can show, or not show something. They can even make the same area of the coin look entirely different - just like they do with the coin in this thread. And I think that's all you're seeing.
