i found a 1985D double die sent to mmns to be graded it came back ms65 red/brown the date is double and the D also the bowtie is Double die here is a pic.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is MMNS? Also you will have to take an up-close pic o the coin. Use the macro button on the camera ( a small flower)
I can kinda make out what you are talkiing about, but that picture really is'nt much more help. P.S. I noticed you live in Dothan, I live in Panama City, Florida
I have several pictures what size do you need? Cool you live in Panama, we are very close to each other.
From the photo, the doubling in the date appears to be MDD, machine doubling , rather than doubled die. Welcome to the forum! Jim
Hi Jim, I have had two coin experts to look at the coin and they both said it was double die. The bowtie is also doubled if you look at it closely. I also sent it to Ken Potter for him to take a look at it.
I see die deterioration doubling on the date and mintmark, but other than that I see nothing out-of-the-ordinary. -Brian
I don't see anything out of the ordinary, but if you sent it to Ken Potter and he confirms a doubled-die, then that is what it is. But it looks like so many coins I've seen from 1982 to the present with machine doubling. IMO
Okay, thanks! I took it to Inter-Co Coin today and he say the doubling in it also and the doubled bowtie.
Coppercoins does list a couple DDO's for this issue. All that is mentioned is the date and TRUST, it's a VERY minor DDO for this year. Sorry, but based on your description (I can't tell squat from the pics), I would have to think it's MD. The vast majority of "experts" at shops and basement TPG's don't know the difference between die doubling and machine doubling. I've seen multitudes of coins improperly attributed as "doubled" when it's just MD damage. I apologize for sounding harsh, but the reality is you probably have just a machine doubled coin and, if it is an 001 or 002, those are only worth $15 in MS-65RD. Your coin is only a VF, so, if it is a true doubled die, it's worth $4.
I appreciate your opinion, but I have had many experts to look at this coin in person who has been in the business close to 50 years. I also have had this coin graded by three expert graders who know the difference between die doubling and machine doubling. I have even sent a pic to Ken Potter and I am waiting a response from him soon. It seems like with some of the people on this site they try to say what is double die and not. You can only give a true and accurate opinion if you are a grader or an expert in coin collection. Every double die is machine doubling regardless, but people choose to put value on the coins they believe has value to it. I know a double die coin is hard to come by, but I belive the one I have is genuine double die. Thanks again for your opinion.
I think it is suppose to be doubled die and not double die. Someone correct me if Im wrong. dersaun if you were already so sure of what you had why would you even bother to post it here?? Trust me when I say this, some of the folks on this forum are like you and I stopping by to learn, get help with our coins that we no nothing about or need help with, just getting started. However I have found that most of the folks on this forum are the experts that you keep talking about. I my be a beginner coin collector but Im no kid and Im no fool. 99% of the info I have gotten from this site has proven true. Trust and believe I do my homework. If you have not found your answer here try somewhere else but Im 99% sure that if you research further you will find that they are correct. Im not trying to be rude but Im not going to be a YES man either, when its not its not.
First off sending a picture to Ken Potter doesn't do justice as sending the real coin. The fact that you didn't send the actual coin to him makes me believe that it is a not a true doubled die. I state that because he (Ken Potter) will only be able to tell from the picture you sent vice being able to hold the coin in hand and if you have a bad quality picture than it will make it that much harder to tell if it is a true DD or MD. If your so called experts was able to tell that you had a real DD then why not take it to one of the top tier's TPGs? You said "You can only give a true and accurate opinion if you are a grader or an expert in coin collection" is just a flat out bunch of BS. How do you think these "experts" became experts? They all had to start somewhere and you don't learn from not practicing..Also has many times, these experts are taking an educated guess, there is no exact answer to grading. Again you wrote "It seems like with some of the people on this site they try to say what is double die and not." this is because people who are new here post pictures of DD all the time when 99.5% of the time it is either a form of Die Deterioration, Mechanical Doubling, Split Plate Doubling etc.. from there it get's worse, these same people who swear up and down that it is a true DD argue until there's no tomorrow. there are a lot of intelligent people that have years of experience that can tell/has the knowledge of what a true DD looks like and will not BS you because they are not here to take money from you like some dealers/coin experts. You state: Every double die is machine doubling regardless, but people choose to put value on the coins they believe has value to it" No that is totally false, not even close..please do your research because Machine Doubling and Doubled die. If you know a double die is hard to come by then you know there's no double die and it's a doubled die. if you believe it's a true DD then take it to NGC or PCGS. best of luck and I hope you are right that it is a DD.
