I think this is a Gordian coin though I don't know what type or if it is real. Has significant verdigris though. About 19.3g and 30mm. Think I will make it into a nice necklace
Thanks Cucumbor Yes it is a shame. But I think I can still give it some life as a jewelry piece. Do you know what is the name for this type of coin?
a sestertius Gordian III Æ(bronze) Sestertius. IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / LAETITIA AVG N SC, Laetitia standing left, with wreath and anchor. RIC 300a, Cohen 122.
I agree with all except for the part about the coin being ruined. Certainly it has a problem but if you were looking for a jewelry piece into which to set a gemstone this is the coin of choice. Without the hole this is a $50 coin at least and adding a couple carats of diamond would quickly offset the loss. The hole appears to be modern which makes one wonder why anyone would do such a thing but all ancient coins have stories to tell and this one has more.
