I just finished checking two boxes of halfs. ended up with 66x2,67x1,68x2,65x1,64x3 plus a 61x1 franklin. Also a 1987p and a nice 1986 liberty commemorative. I guet lucky finding this commemorative cause so far i have found five different ones. IMG_0490.jpg IMG_0491.jpg IMG_0492.jpg

Tried my first box of halves yesteday: 1 '68 40%. I filled, and then I think - broke  - the bank's coin machine returning them (no - not the same bank). After the girl opened it the second time, the coins were burning hot and really chewed up (the edges and high points on the obverse were severely marred). I got another '68 from a teller tray three weeks ago. Have gotten a pre-64 quarter and dime this year in pocket change. Oh, also from the box of halves I got a few AU Kennedys to help fill up my album.

I'm happy about the 40% Kennedy I got from the box, but judging from the results I see posted (and now my own), I'm thinking of shifting to dime boxes. Less 'conspicuous' (for lack of a better term) to the bank (b/c they are - unlike halves - still in circulation) and the silver content of two pre-64 dimes is about equal to one 40% half!

    $500 for a box of halves = 1000 coins.
    $250 for a box of dimes = 2500 coins.

So, for the cost of a box of halves ($500), I can get 5,000 dimes. If the chances of finding 2 pre-64 dimes per 5,000 (2 boxes) is greater than finding 1 40% half per 1,000 (one box) - it might be worth it. Obviously, I have completely given up hope of finding any Walkers, Franklins or '64 Kennedys: those would be AWESOME :D but would obviously throw this entire calculation out the window. Also, it takes a heck of a lot longer to search 5,000 dimes than it does for 1,000 half dollars (especially since the bicentennials are so abundant but quick/easy to pick out).

So far, my roll-searching statistics (and I will be punching everything into Excel because I'm a nerd like that!) are:

40% half dollars: 1 in 1,000 or 0.1% (with only one box searched - I'm not counting pocket change or teller drawer finds).

What are your thoughts/observations? Anyone keeping stats?

In Houston, I find about 1 silver dime per box. I find 3.27 silver halves per box (about 80% of them the 40% variety and 20% of them are 90% silver).

    Others may have different luck.

I don't keep stats by the box, only date. For days that I have found dimes I average 3 per day, but that would exclude days in which I did not find anything.

Wow! If I had luck like that, I wouldn't have even thought about switching to dimes. Methinks I might try another box of halves. Gotta figure out how to return the rest of these (about $300 worth!) since I don't want to use that same coin machine again (and since I'm pretty sure I broke it).

I gave up trying to figure out per box ratios. Honestly, all I care about is the bottom line. I'd have to do this for about a year to feel comfortable with any statistics as it would take that time to normalize the info. It's like playing blackjack. You could sit down and hit a couple of hot shoes and win hundreds or thousands of dollars, or do the complete opposite. Over a prolonged period of time you'll win some, lose some, but you will undoubtedly lose more than you win. The statistics don't lie. With CRHing it's similar except you don't lose anything but time. One box of halves does not tell a good tale. I've had 1 amazing box of halves with 36 keepers, a ton with 1-2 keepers, and as many if not more with nothing. As long as I see steady progression it doesn't matter to me. I also don't care enough to accurately check all of my boxes searched or teller tray scores. As I said, I only care about the bottom line and am I enjoying myself doing this. When it stops being fun, I'm out. I could make a lot more money with my time doing a bunch of other things. However, I enjoy this. So it's worth it to me.

I had a monster score at a bank today. Now this is the same bank I found two rolls of silver halves months ago, and I always keep coming back to see if I can get lucky again; what I found was truly astonishing. I asked if the teller had any halves and she did, $2.50 worth, and I found that they were three Walkers ('36, '43, and '45) and two Franklins ('53-D and '62-D). But as I was getting ready to leave, the teller told me she had old dimes and quarters she'd like to get rid of. I peeked over the counter and found two translucent envelopes stocked with silver. I bought the coins at $15.75 face value and when I examined them later, I was astonished at what they contained:

Dimes included 49 silver Roosevelts and an 1899 Barber! That was my first Barber dime from circulation, and I was eager to check out the quarters. I opened the envelope to find 42 silver Washingtons, including a '39, '40-S, '42, '42-S, '44 and other dates from '46-64. But within the quarters was something even more amazing, an 1893 Barber quarter! This is my first non-Washington silver quarter from circulation! Both Barbers are my only non-Indian Head cent nineteenth century finds. What's even better is that after a lot of skunked quarter searches, this one came to reward me for my perseverance. I am definitely taking some cookies to that bank again!

Yeah, I haven't had a big score in a while. Since work's picked up, though, I've been doing less bank to bank to bank asking and more boxes, as it takes less time to pick them up. So I've just been running into some weak boxes lately (0-2 40%ers consistently).
However, I did pick up my weekly order of two nickel boxes and each had a proof (and 5 war nicks between them). First non-half proofs I've found in circulation. One '72-S and a 74-S. The 74-S has seen a lot more handling, and there's pretty much no cameo, but the fields are still mirrored some. And the 72-S is nice, other than a few fingerprints on the reverse.

Skunked on quarters at the grocery store. I know I really, really shouldn't search quarters, but I am just a Washington junkie! He is my favorite president/founding father and one of the finest Americans to ever live (IMO). I hope to one day find that elusive "envelope filled with silver". Especially if it is filled with Washingtons!
