Commemorative german coin?

    I hope someone will recognize the heavy, large German coin I inherited from my father. I have researched the words that say 'und ruhig fliesst der rhein' ('and quiet rules the world'). It's dated 1917. Any info on this coin and its value would be appreciated !!

    It's a medal rather than a coin; a German coin from that timeframe would have included both a denomination and the name of the issuing country or state. The caption translates to "And quietly flows the Rhine".

    I know no specifics about this piece.

    That looks like the Goetz medal for the Battle of Verdun. I don't know much about the series, but they do command a pretty high premium (typically in the $50-150 range, but some approach $1000 in value).

    There are reproductions of these out there - I'm not sure how to ID a reproduction though.
