Could congress get any dumber?

Take a look at some of these proposed bills and the title will speak for itself. They are intended to save money but are doing the exact opposite. They want to eliminate the dollar COIN instead of the bill.

I don't want to get political but if you want to keep the dollar coins them call your representative and tell them.

I once headr a stat that Federal Reserve Notes circulate for an average of 18 months before being destroyed, and coins can circulate an average of 30 years before they need to be destroyed.

Maybe it's finally time that the $1 bill be discontinued like it has in so many other Western countries. Then the demand for $1 coins would pick up, and in theory, the cost of minting coins would pay off in the long run since they would last longer.

Also, as collectors, it would mean that coins would wear out, and that would mean that in 10 years from now, presidential coins would grade from Fine to MS (whereas now, almost all of them are in MS state). It's much more interesting to collect coins when there is a wide spread of grades out there.

 

Did you read the story? The coins would not be eliminated, the needless production would simply be suspended until there's need. The proposed bills are excellent and logical. The last congress MANDATED production of dollar coins whereas the current congress wants to stop the manditory production....it makes perfect sense compared to what the last round of clowns did.

 

I have to agree with you, but unless they do something about the dollar bill in circulation there may never become a need to continue production, or could be sporadic at best.

 

Like most coin collectors, I'd prefer to have dollar coins over bills and would appreciate the modest savings this would create. But really, we have both out in circulation now and it's clear where people's preferences are. I'm fine with that.

 

Bills such as HR 2789 “Prevention of Wasteful and Unneeded Coins Act of 2011” introduced by Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan, would suspend ALL Presidential coin production for a period of fifteen (15) years (or until current stockpiles are exhausted).

That seems reasonable, but current legislation links the First Spouse series of numismatic products to the production of the Presidential coins. I would like to see one of the other bills pass which continues numismatic production of the Presidential dollars until the series ends.

After that, we need to take a serious look at how coinage decisions are made. The current process is clearly "broken". How about a "Coin Czar"?

 

Those proposed bills are pathetic. They should eliminate the bills of one and two dollars. Introduce a 2$ coin, eliminate the 1¢ coin, and mass-produce the 1$ coins. Banks are not exposing the coins, because they want people to utilize their electric products. Some other businesses are too scare to [perhaps] lose some money, therefore, they opt to not order 1$ coins. If the one and two-dollar bills are eliminated, then there will be a surge of fake 1$ coins in circulation. However, it should also influence more people to acquire bank account(s). After some things get settled, they should diminish the new mintage of all the coins.

Maybe one of you guys should write a letter, post it here and we can all send it to our congressmen telling them that we want coins not bills. Y'all should get on that cause I'm too lazy

The dollar coin program obviously has been a failure. What would be dumb would be to continue a policy or program that doesn't work. The opportunity to use dollar coins has been there for years now. The fact that they languish in federal reserve vaults instead of circulating is proof that most people don't want them. Congress actually taking the hint from the people and getting rid of a ineffective program is a step forward. Trying to force people to use coins when they don't want to is what's dumb.

 

When the UK introduced pound coins to replace the notes there was a lot of resistance, just like when the 50p coin replaced the old "ten bob" note. I think most Brits have now got used to them. They are great for vending machines.

I would be happy to see Kennedy Half Dollars and a regular $1 coin in circulation. Just as long as it doesn't have Pelosi's head on it.
