This recent acquisition is one that I had been looking for. It is the rarest note I own other than a 1923 $10 VF Poker chip. A few nicks and smudges, and as usual the Obverse is better than the Reverse - but overall it's in decent shape. I had a heck of a time finding one that I could pay for, I'll tell ya that, and it still broke my bank account. Ben Franklin is such an iconic figure in our history. I seems right that his note is rather rare.
Now that is what I call a $50 Bill. Very pretty and I can only imagine what that must have cost you. I have bought my first book on currency and this note is very special. Congrats! JAF
Thanks a lot - I just have a moderate collection and rarely post anything up here. I usually drool over everyone else's stuff - hehe. This is a great forum because the people are so supportive of each other when they do get something nice.
Sorry to follow the tangent, but I must acknowledge and agree. Sooooooo many places, regardless of the hobby, a large part of the community will spend most of their time finding fault with another member's latest purchase/toy/acquisition. "Oh, I wouldn't have set that up that way" or "You paid entirely too much, I know a guy who..." This place seems to be the antithesis to that attitude. Members regularly have nothing but appreciation and admiration for even "simple" or "inexpensive" coins and paper. If the new acquisition is a source of pride for the poster, they know that feeling, and share in the enjoyment. Ok...mushy stuff over. I now return you all to drooling over legolas's awesome note.
I normally would not say but since I don't want to sell it, so what the heck - it was $2800. I see a couple on ebay now for $4700 $7000, but they are rated which bumps the price up a bit (rated 30 and 40).
I hate to be Debbie Downer here, but this note was previously sold twice in the last 3 months. Both times it was in a PCGS 8 holder, and both times it looked distinctly different from the note when n777mwood sold it to you, Legolas. First it sold at Heritage for ~$1600 - http://currency.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=3513&lotNo=16909 Then it sold on eBay for ~$2000 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/200604097635 n777mwood, along with rayal454, jimrob23, and currencycounter are notorious eBay sellers who doctor notes precisely like this. They remove perfectly respectable notes from TPG holders, and doctor them up to give the appearance of a higher grade. Effectively, this note has been put through the chemical and physical ringer (bleached, pressed, and trimmed) to make it look far different from its true original state. If that is not an issue for you, and you feel like the note was fairly represented and you paid a fair price, then please don't let me stop your enjoyment of the note. If it is an issue, then I suggest you explore options available to get your money back ASAP before your window of opportunity is completely gone. Either way, at least you really know what you have there. Good luck.
I agree with the other posters legolas...beautiful note and I would think the centerpiece of your collection. Congratulations on such a nice addition. Bruce
Despite what 'debbie downer" says up there *heh*....this really ought to be about having a taking amount of joy in appreciating such a classic and elegant piece....and in THAT regard, you got a SPECTACULAR deal imo.
Vibr0nic is 100% right. I feel like a complete fool. I had no idea - I am not an expert nor am I a Currency Internet sleuth. Now I am a victim. I will post more later . . . need to research options, if any since it has been a month.
